The Mediterranean-rim countries hold around 400 million people and 135 million of them live on the coast. A steady migration towards coastal areas, specifically in the south and east of the Mediterranean, is causing pressure on the coastal environment and, more importantly, on its biodiversity. In this second Mediterranean regional assessment, all the reptile and amphibian species existing within the region of study have been evaluated for their global conservation status. This assessment aims to assist in regional planning and to help identify internationally important sites for biodiversity. Like the first in the series, it also hopes to encourage development of a network of regional experts to enable future assessments and the continued updating of the baseline dataset.

Following the magnitude of the destruction that resulted from the December 2004 tsunami there was an urgent need to draw up emergency strategies and action plans, in order to contain, and wherever possible to reverse, the adverse impacts on the environment, while at the same time continuing reconstruction work to restore livelihoods and infrastructure. A situation analysis was undertaken and from this analysis the current strategy was formulated.

This paper addresses the need to factor the environment into coastal development planning. It contends that the economic calculations that underpin coastal development decisions remain flawed, and fundamentally incomplete, because they omit an important set of costs and benefits – those associated with ecosystem goods and services.

In this groundbreaking text, forest quality is discussed as a useful new concept in forest conservation and management. Three main assessment criteria are used: authenticity, environmental benefits, and social and economic benefits. A methodology and protocol for collecting and analysing data is described, and the approach needed with each indicator is outlined in detail. A landscape approach to assessment is advocated, as meeting conservation goals also means addressing human needs, and balancing the trade-offs involved is only possible at a landscape scale. Assessment is demonstrated in a series of case studies from Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America, showing how this method can be used in many ways to help forest conservation management.

This book presents the economic justification for including mangrove rehabilitation and restoration efforts in current tsunami reconstruction projects in Sri Lanka. The results provide a solid platform for the decision makers to select the best development strategies for the tsunami-affected communities by comparing the results provided by this study with the value of alternative uses of mangroves in these areas.

Water resources of Balochistan, an arid province of Pakistan, are extremely scarce and limited. It is highly imperative that these resources be used most judiciously to ensure sustainable agriculture development and productivity. This, in turn requires knowledge of crop water requirements (CWR) in various agro-climatic zones of the province. Lack of this information often results in farmers over or under irrigating their fields with consequent loss in yields and production. Various agencies in the country have determined CWR values for the Indus Basin; however, for Balochistan the water requirements of various popular crops have not been estimated.

The manual is based on the curricular guidelines of the Primary Teachers’ Certificate (PTC)course which is usually offered in the elementary colleges of Education. The curriculum of PTC carries a unit on environmental education for more than a decade, however there was no specific teaching and learning material available throughout the country for teachers and students. The Bureau of Curriculum, Quetta, which is the apex institution for teacher education and curriculum development in the province has taken the lead on this. The current publication is an outcome of the collaboration between BoC Quetta and IUCNP’ office in Balochistan, which motivated BoC to integrate environment and sustainable development into its programmes and materials. The manuals is authored by Mr. Mohammed Asghar ex staff of BoC and it is developed with the technical and financial support of IUCN Pakistan. The manual provides a valuable resource for teachers and students of PTC due to its relevance to the context of Balochistan and the use of Urdu language

Education is the most neglected sector in the district and the District Government is trying to uplift the situation through effective and realistic planning. The District Education Plan 2005 is an effort of the District Education Board (DEB) which was established in February 2004. This document is presented as a planning tool which has been formulated based on an extensive situation analysis of the education sector and current available information regarding the district.

Under the Sindh Local Government Ordinance 2001, the District Nazims are expected to provide the Vision for district wide development along with strategies as to how it could be achieved. Central America is a region that shares ecosystems, river basins, and protected areas. The development of projects, plans or activities likely to produce transboundary impacts need to be appropriately considered, and an EIA process established and anchored in regional policies and legislation. This book, analyses the relevant initiatives on transboundary EIA in the world, and advances the basic elements of a regional agreement on EIA in a transboundary context for Central America.

An environmental flow is the water regime provided within a river, wetland or coastal zone to maintain ecosystems and their benefits where there are competing water uses and where flows are regulated. Pioneering efforts in South Africa, Australia and the United States have shown that the process to establish them poses great challenges. Second in the series of the Water & Nature Initiative, this guide draws extensively on the experiences in these countries to offer hands-on advice and practical guidance on technical issues for this emerging issue on the water resource agenda.

This book consists of 28 papers selected from among those presented at the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas 5th Conference on Protected Areas of East Asia, held on 21-25 June 2005 in Hong Kong. The title of the book repeats the theme of the Conference: "Sustainable Management of Protected Areas for Future Generations". All the selected papers relate to the management of protected areas, but in other aspects they are very diverse. Almost half the papers come from the host city, Hong Kong, but the study areas of the others range from Hainan Island in the south to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north. The focal ecosystems are equally diverse, from forested mountains to urban wetlands, and from streams to coral reefs. Some are concerned with the entire biotas of protected areas, while others focus on plants, birds, fish or invertebrates. Some report success stories, while others focus on threats, but most record both. This is the reality of conservation in densely populated East Asia, where most protected areas are too small and too popular to survive without
