Ecosystems and biodiversity in deep waters and high seas

This report reveals recent discoveries about the beauty, value and vulnerability of life in the deep seas and in the open ocean. It explores what these astonishing findings mean for current oceans governance, what the impacts are of present and potential human activities, and what can be done to promote effective and sustainable management of the riches of the deep and open oceans. The ecosystems and species described herein do not adhere to man-made boundaries; many exist within national jurisdiction as well as in the high seas and seabed Area. It is hoped that this report will provide a common basis of knowledge to stimulate action by states and the global community.

The status and distribution of freshwater fish endemic to the Mediterranean basin

Freshwater in the Mediterranean basin is of huge economic, environmental and livelihood importance. However, with a growing population and an increasing number of tourists, the freshwater resources are under great pressure. Since the threatened status of plants and animals is one of the most widely used indicators for assessing the condition of ecosystems and their biodiversity, an assessment was undertaken for freshwater fish in this region. The assessment aims to assist in regional planning through the provision of a baseline dataset. It also hopes to encourage development of a network of regional experts to enable future assessments and the continued updating of the baseline dataset.

Not only was there a devastating loss of life, but coastal resources and infrastructure in the Indian Ocean suffered massive destruction as well. It compiles and summarises many reports and reef damage assessments into a single volume and makes the findings, especially the recommendations, available for decisions makers and people of the region.

In international negotiations, especially on biodiversity, local ecological knowledge has been often limited to issues relating to indigenousness.
