This document is the product of extensive consultation between EC policy advisers and task managers dealing with biodiversity and the environment, and those working on natural resource and non-natural resource issues. The important issue of integrating biodiversity into development cooperation policy and practice is addressed. It highlights the need to realise biodiversity's full potential to support development while addressing the direct and underlying causes of its loss.

It has been designed to help them think about the influx of tourism to natural protected areas, and to urge them to consciously plan for management of the interactions of tourists and the natural and cultural environment. General suggestions have been made that each jurisdiction and park can use when developing their own approaches to policy development, funding, implementation and management. Local communities, private tourism operators and land-use planners will also be able to use various sections of this document to assist their practices in being more sustainable

Invasive plants and animals : is there a way out?

Alien invasive species are considered by the Species Survival Commission to be the second largest threat to indigenous species, following habitat destruction. The Netherlands Committee of IUCN has drawn attention to the growing number of invasive species and organized a conference on the issue in September 2000. This publication contains array of papers presented at the Conference on Alien Invasive Species the held in Leiden, the Netherlands. It also contains summaries of the discussions held during the conference and the recommendations emanating from them.

The fourth part in a series of action plan, this publication covers less than one-quarter of the world's antelope species that are found in North Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Herds numbering in the tens of thousands formerly occurred across the steppes and semi-deserts of Eurasia and India, but these have nearly all been reduced to fractions of their earlier size. Populations are fragmented across the region and several species have disappeared altogether during recent decades. The challenge for the 21st century is to ensure that other species whose status is currently precarious do not follow them into extinction.

It is sometimes assumed that protected areas must be in conflict with the rights and traditions of indigenous and other traditional peoples on their domains. In reality, where indigenous peoples are interested in the conservation and traditional use of their lands, waters, territories and the natural and cultural resources that they contain, conflicts need not arise. Formal protected areas can provide a means to recognise and guarantee the efforts of many communities who have long protected certain areas, such as sacred groves and mountains. This publication provides a framework for developing partnerships between indigenous and other traditional peoples and protected area managers. It contains a number of case studies giving examples from different parts of the world on successful experiences on the application of these principles

One of the major impediments to the advancement of medicinal plant conservation is the difficulty of accessing and analysing the relevant literature. Books and papers on medicinal plants count by the tens of thousands worlwide. The bulk of them, however, relate to pharmacology and medicinal properties or to classical ethnobotanical research, with very scarce data available on distribution, life history, biology, population status, levels of extraction and trade or resource management of taxa. This publication is designed to collect information from the various sources in order to begin setting plant conservation priorities. This volume covers the period 1997-2000.
