Wetlands play a very important role in the lives of the people of Lao PDR. The majority of the population of 4.1 million live in the wetland rich Mekong basin and are dependent on wetlands for subsistence and income generation. In addition to freshwater fish - the principal source of animal protein in the country - a wide range of other wetland products are utilised. The waters of the Mekong and its tributaries are also significant for hydro-power generation and irrigation capacity. This publication is a compilation of up-to-date information on each wetland in the country. An overview of wetlands in Lao PDR and management issues are also discussed in detail which will be very useful to wetland planners and managers.

Today, there is increasing recognition that traditional and indigenous knowledge systems can provide alternative strategies for the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources, a realisation that is strongly reflected in the Convention on biological diversity. However, there is a fear that this interest in traditional knowledge systems will lead to the basic human, cultural and scientific rights of indigenous people being sidelined, something the CBD fails to address adequately. This had given rise to the concept of Traditional Resources Rights (TRR). This publication, therefore, explores TRRs and indigenous peoples and local communities' rights to their knowledge systems and explores the ways and means in which these can be adquately protected by international legislation.

With almost 5000 island and islets, the Mediterranean comprises one of the largest groups of islands in the world. With its wealth of species, high degree of endemism, long history and tolerance of all kinds of disruptions, it is of extremely high value to global biodiversity. However, over the last few decades, major socio-economic changes have increased the negative impact of human activity in the region and today, the islands are extremely vulnerable. This conservation strategy for island plants and habitats is intended to provide one of the basic components of an overall biodiversity conservation programme covering the entire Mediterranean Basin, in order to assist towards sustainable development and to help combat existing or potential threats such as climate change and desertification. It is intended to assist nature conservation managers and decision-makers in building and implementing their conservation programmes.

Increasing demands on the world's natural resources pose a serious threat to palm biodiversity. This action plan identifies the most threatened palm species in order to present recommendations for conservation measures that cater to their specific requirements, and to provide strategic guidelines for the conservation and sustainable utilisation of the many palms that provide food, construction material, and an important source of revenue for many people.

This action plan chronicles the threats faced by wild orchids, but more importantly to critical habitats that host extraordinarily high orchid diversity and endemicity. It explores and recommends specific ways that national and local government, legislators, scientists and orchid conservationists as well as growers can all help to reverse present trends. The facts and viewpoints presented in this comprehensive document update and supplement the information available to conservation organisations and agencies through the world so that they can lobby their appropriate government offices more effectively.

The cranes are among the most ancient and distinctive families of birds on earth, yet they are among the world's most threatened groups of birds. This action plan describes the many different sorts of threats facing cranes especially as they migrate through different countries, and the many solutions that have been attempted to overcome them. It is intended for all those involved in crane conservation, including conservation biologists, conservation organisations, other non-governemental organisations, international development agencies, political, civic, and business leaders, funding agencies and foundations, educators, members of the general public

Effective habitat conservation is essential if wild populations of primates are to survive. This revised edition of the African Primate Action Plan (1986) provides a summary review of progress on projects originally recommended and gives recommendations for new projects in areas and on populations not previously included

A fully revised and extended version of a report with the same title, first published in 1989. The book deals with an important but long neglected aspect of the use and management of tropical forests, analyzing the role of the vast array of non-timber forest products in the local and national economies of Southeast Asia. The term "non-timber forest products" encompasses all biological material other than timber which are extracted from forests for human use. These include foods, medicines, spices, essential oils, resins, gums, latexes, ornamental plants, wildlife, fuelwook and raw materials like rattan, smallwood and fibres. The book, which gives special attention to the importance of non-timber forest products for the more than 30 million forest-dependent people in Southeast Asia, has already proven to be stimulating reading for all those concerned with forest conservation and sustainable forest use. In Southeast Asia, but also in many other parts of the world.

Bangladesh, like many orther countries, has signed a number of conventions, treaties and protocols (ICTP) related to environment. This publication aims to (1) identify and make an inventory of relevant environmental ICTPs and prepare a brief on those; (2) identify those ICTPs which the Government of Bangladesh has signed, ratified or accessed; (3) identify those ICTPs which have not been signed, ratified or accessed but need to be done; (4) briefly discuss the implication of these ICTPs on environment and development; (5) present the implementation status of these ICTPs. This publication will be useful for all concerned and will hopefully succeed in generating thoughts and actions leading to a better understanding and more effective harnessing of these international environmental instruments

The Convention on Biological Diversity is an historic commitment by the world’s nations to conserve biodiversity, to use biological resources sustainably and to share equitably the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. It is the first global legal instrument to comprehensively address all aspects of biodiversity. The Guide illustrates the scientific, technical and legal issues which the Convention raises. Designed as a reference document, the Guide’s table of contents, pagination, index and commentary cross-references give the reader easy access to the book’s comprehensive rendering of what could be involved in fulfilling the obligations of the Convention. There is also a detailed bibliography.

This handbook was written for staff working in protected areas around the world (including parks, wilderness areas, resarch areas, and other types of protected landscapes) who encounter conflicts of all kinds. The Handbook can also be a resource for other interested parties who want to play a constructive role in protected area conflicts. A simple framework is offered and some strategies for responding to different types of conflicts in protected areas are explored. Case studies, which are the heart of the Handook, describe a variety of both short and long term approaches for dealing with conflict.

Derived from papers submitted at Parks Congress workshops, 1992. The aim is to show how tourism and protected areas can flourish alongside each other by guiding the development of tourism along lines which respect the limited capacity of many areas to absorb the pressure of visitors and their activities. The editor has drawn together a wealth of knowledge and experience and distilled it into essential guidance for protected areas planners, managers and tourists alike
