Scientific/technical activities
Describe the results/achievements of the actions taken:
IUCN continued to substantially advance its work on promoting nature-based solutions to climate change in 2019. Particular highlights were the explicit inclusion of a dedicated track on 'nature-based solutions' in the UN Climate Summit convened by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in New York in September 2019. IUCN was part of a core group that directly supported the co-chairs of this track, China and New Zealand, in delivering a successful NBS outcome at the Summit, including a 'Nature-based Solutions for Climate Manifesto'. IUCN also successfully launched a new report on 'Nature-based Solutions in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) at the Summit, which was widely welcomed. NBS also received unprecedented attention and recognition at UNFCCC COP25 in Madrid, including in number of high-level UN events, which IUCN was actively involved in, and also in the main formal COP decision. Solid progress was also made by IUCN in advancing ecosystem-based mitigation, adaptation and disaster risk reduction on the ground across the world, through its multiple initiatives and projects, including, for example, through the Bonn Challenge. IUCN also published landmark assessments in 2019 that highlighted the risks posed by climate change on species, for ocean deoxygenation, and on World Heritage Site glaciers, which underscored the need for more ambitious and urgent global action on GHG emission reductions. The Climate Change Task Force of the IUCN's Council's Programme and Policy Committee also met at regular intervals to provide feedback on how IUCN's future engagement on climate change could be further strengthened, going forward.
What challenges/obstacles have been encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and how were they overcome :
A lot of important climate-related work is being successfully done by different IUCN programmes, members and commissions. However, despite increased coordination, overall aggregation still arguably remains sub-optimal, considering the scale of the climate crisis, due to limited dedicated capacity for engagement on this issue within the organization.
Briefly describe what future actions are needed for the implementation of this Resolution:
Full and ambitious implementation will require sustained collaboration and coordination across different parts of IUCN, and enhanced institutional investment in terms of strengthened core capacities for ensuring the same.
