The Arabian Peninsula contains a wide diversity of sand and gravel deserts, mountains, coastal and offshore habitats and sparse wetlands. It also contains a diverse mammal fauna which comprises a mix of Arabian endemics, species with affinities to the Horn of Africa and Saharo-Sindian, Iranian-Central Asian, and Mediterranean elements.

L'okapi (Okapia johnstoni), emblématique mais insaisissable, est un animal endémique des forêts tropicales du centre et du nord-est de la République Démocratique du Congo (RDC). Cette stratégie de conservation globale, qui couvre une période de dix ans, fournit un plan important pour une action commune afin d'assurer la survie de cette espèce du Congo unique et irremplaçable.

The iconic but elusive okapi (Okapia johnstoni) is endemic to the central and north-eastern tropical rainforest of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This comprehensive, ten-year conservation strategy provides an important roadmap for joint action to ensure the continued survival of this unique and irreplaceable Congolese species.

La présente analyse de situation a été réalisée pour éclairer les réponses à plusieurs résolutions formulées lors du 5 Congrès mondial de la nature en 2012, concernant l'état critique des grands vertébrés d'Afrique centrale et de l'Ouest.

This situation analysis was undertaken to inform responses to several resolutions made at the 5th World Conservation Congress in 2012 about the plight of large vertebrates in West and Central Africa. It draws on a wide range of information to provide information on the status of these species, important sites, pressures, legislation, the effectiveness of protected areas, and both community-based incentives for conservation and institutional responses.

The Arabian Peninsula contains a diversity of desert and mountain habitats. Reptile species richness is high, with 172 species currently recognized. Among these, 89 species (52%) are endemic to the Arabian Peninsula. The conservation status of these species was assessed at a workshop held in Sharjah, UAE, 6-9 February 2012 through the application of the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria at the global and regional scales. Distribution maps were compiled for the majority of species.

A Regional Red List Workshop for the carnivores of the Arabian Peninsula took place 8-10 February 2011. The aim of the workshop was to assess the regional conservation status of terrestrial carnivores in the Arabian Peninsula. The information provided here will help to put national conservation priorities into a regional context, thus maximising the effectiveness of local and national conservation measures, and facilitating the development of integrated regional conservation strategies.
