With the smaller number of marine protected areas (MPAs) compared with terrestrial protected areas, there is less experience and understanding of applying the categories to MPAs. Application of the categories to MPAs has often been inaccurate and inconsistent.

This publication brings together case studies, best practices and lessons learned on capacity development aspects of water and the green economy. Contained herein are mainly constributions from UN agencies working together in the inter-agency mechanism known as UN-Water, which look at the characteristics of a green economy and what it will take to accomplish the transition to one with respect to capacity development needs within the water supply and sanitation sector.

The workbook is designed to allow for a dynamic process of marine protected area (MPA) management based on the lessons learnt through piloting the first draft of the workbook in eight MPAs in Kenya, Tanzania and the Seychelles. It takes into account the management issues faced in the WIO, is cost effective and encourages self-assessment by the managers. This workbook was produced in order to test and adapt the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) methodologies for use at marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Western Indian Ocean. The workbook is designed to allow for a dynamic process of MPA management based on the lessons learnt from pilot assessments in Kenya, Tanzania and the Seychelles.

This report provides results of testing the Workbook for Assessing Management Effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas in the Western Indian Ocean at eight pilot sites in three countries. The assessment looks at not only the impacts but also the effectiveness of the management process. It does not require the collection of new data, unless that can be done quickly but provides a "snap-shot" of management effectiveness at a particular point in time, with recommendations for improvement.

This document reports on the results of a workshop on selective fishing and balanced harvest which took place in Nagoya in October 2010. The workshop examined the extent to which selective fishing as currently and traditionally practiced is able to contribute effectively to both ecosystem and fisheries sustainability.

This study focused specifically on one perceived opportunity for developing IPES, namely the concept of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD). REDD refers to any conservation or sustainable land-use initiative that effectively mitigates a real deforestation/degradation threat in a given area.

The booklet provides a range of case studies and other materials to make the forest sector more biodiversity-friendly, and socially beneficial. It addresses the linkages between forestry, biodiversity, and development/poverty reduction. The summaries and examples included in this booklet show how biodiversity and sustainable economic development can go hand in hand.

Drawing on a range of information sources, including National Reports, biodiversity indicators information, scientific literature, and a study assessing biodiversity scenarios for the future [4MB], the third edition of Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO-3) summarizes the latest data on status and trends of biodiversity and draws conclusions for the future strategy of the Convention.
