A sustainable world : defining and measuring sustainable development

"Sustainability" and "sustainable development" have become the guiding principles of environmental policy and international development, but what do they really mean? How do we know if we are moving toward a sustainable world? The contributors to this volume address these questions from diverse backgrounds and a variety of perspectives - with the aim of translating ideas into practice.

From care to action : making a sustainable world

Sir Martin Holdgate, former IUCN Director General, was a principal author of both the "World conservation strategy" and "Caring for the earth". In this book, he brings his unrivalled experience to the task of reviewing progress to date and examining what now needs to be done. He argues that we must work for change at every level, from our understanding of our place in relation to nature and the values we put on it, up to a reformed economic structure and new social institutions.

Strategies for national sustainable development : a handbook for their planning and implementation

Both Agenda 21 and "Caring for the earth : a strategy for sustainable living" recommend that every country should undertake a National Sustainable Development Strategy in order to mobilize and focus society's efforts to achieve sustainability. This book shows how the task can be approached, drawing on a wide range of national Conservation Strategies, Green Plans, Environmental Action Plans, sectoral plans such as Forestry Action Plans and comparable exercises throughout the world.

The economic value of biodiversity

The authors show how cost-benefit techniques can be applied to biodiversity and how they provide a measure of the efficiency of conservation techniques. Only if biodiversity conservation passes a basic economic test such as cost-benefit analysis is it likely to be incorporated into policy. Written with great clarity and accessibility, the book will be invaluable to policy-makers and others grappling with this subject, and is also a very suitable introdution and course-book for students of economics and environmental studies.

The law of the mother : protecting indigenous peoples in protected areas

Compiled by WWF in collaboration with IUCN, this document offers a comprehensive view of how to design and implement conservation projects to provide for local peoples, wildlife, and the land itself. Written by scientists, environmentalists, and representatives of NGOs working on every continent, the essays in this collection also note areas of continuing conflict, such as issues of ownership, but also describe how "creative communities" are experimenting with innovative solutions to the political, ecological, and human challenges that protected area managers must overcome.
