This book is about the conservation of genetic diversity of wild plants in situ in their natural surroundings, primarily in existing protected areas but also outside conventional protected areas. The principles outlined are equally applicable for the in situ genetic conservation of any wild plant species, whether the aim is to maintain a species threatened by habitat fragmentation, over-collection from the wild or a species that has potential use as a gene donor to our crops.

This publication summarises the main findings of an assessment of the 2006EU Biodiversity Action Plan which reviewed the progress made on each of the 150 actions that made up the plan and an EU 2010 Biodiversity Baseline report produced by the European Environment Agency. It highlights the key achievements made under the ten key objectives of the 2006 EU Biodiversity Action Plan.

With the support of the Altener Programme of the European Commission, this elucidates the Island 2010 campaign, whose aim is to promote, identify and consolidate the strategy "Towards 100% Renewable Energy Sources Supply" in island territories.

The case studies highlighted offer an ideal starting point in understanding the full environmental implications of products. This guide shows how a life cycle approach can be used to identify and reduce the environmental and health impacts of the products we use.
