Climate change and biodiversity in the European Union overseas entities

This background paper offers for the first time a comparative analysis of the 28 overseas entities of the European Union; its purpose is to establish the current state of existing knowledge on the impacts of climate change on the biodiversity of the European Union overseas entities. It starts with a thematic analysis presenting the transversal threats on overseas entities in the face of climate change.

The status and distribution of freshwater biodiversity in western Africa

Lack of readily available information on the status and distribution of inland water taxa in western Africa explains why biodiversity is often poorly represented within the development planning process. In response to this need for information, a regional assessment of the status and distribution of 1,395 taxa of freshwater fishes, molluscs, odonates, crabs, and selected families of aquatic plants from across western Africa was conducted.

European Red List of saproxylic beetles

The European Red List is a review of the conservation status of c.6,000 European species (mammals, reptiles, amphibians, freshwater fishes, butterflies, dragonflies, and selected groups of beetles, molluscs, and vascular plants) according to IUCN regional Red Listing guidelines. It identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at the regional level in order that appropriate conservation action can be taken to improve their status. This is the first assessment of the Red List status of Europe's saproxylic beetles, that is beetles depending on wood decay.

European Red List of dragonflies

The European Red List is a review of the conservation status of c.6,000 European species (mammals, reptiles, amphibians, freshwater fishes, butterflies, dragonflies, and selected groups of beetles, molluscs, and vascular plants) according to IUCN regional Red Listing guidelines. It identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at the regional level – in order that appropriate conservation action can be taken to improve their status. This study has evaluated 137 species and subspecies present in Europe. It shows us that about 15% of European dragonflies are threatened.

European Red List of butterflies

The European Red List is a review of the conservation status of c.6,000 European species (mammals, reptiles, amphibians, freshwater fishes, butterflies, dragonflies, and selected groups of beetles, molluscs, and vascular plants) according to IUCN regional Red Listing guidelines. It identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at the regional level – in order that appropriate conservation action can be taken to improve their status. This comprehensive assessment of all European butterflies provides an overview of the conservation status of this important insect group.

Somalia environmental profile : an interactive CD of information for practitioners and decision-makers

This interactive CD was developed in conjunction with a Country Environmental Profile for Somalia by the Eastern Africa Regional Office of IUCN, for the EC Somalia Operations Office. The objective of developing this CD and Somalia’s CEP was to “provide environmental, social and economic information to the EC Somalia Operations Office and the Somalia Administrations to guide the identification of specifications on environmental objectives and benchmarks for the EC Cooperation activities in its 2008-2013 indicative programmes for Somalia".

The status and distribution of European mammals

Numerous scientific studies show that biodiversity in Europe has been declining rapidly for some time and that this pattern has been matched by the great periods of expansion and intensification of land use. This first assessment of the Red List status of Europe’s and the European Union's mammals shows us that 15% of our species are threatened with extinction, 27% were identified as declining and another 33% had an unknown population trend.
