This guide is provides guidance on how to structure enabling investments and prepare the ground for asset investments that yield acceptable returns and reduced risk, not only for investors, but also for local forest right-holders, national governments and society at large. The volume sets out a framework for structuring investments with tactical advice for building the partnerships necessary for success.

A symposium on community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) for the conservation of CITES-listed species was organized by the Austrian Ministry of the Environment and the European Commission in Vienna, Austria, in May 2010. Its aim was to provide the necessary knowledge base for a broad policy discussion within the European Union on the relevance of local conservation programmes for CITES to achieve the goals as set out in its current Strategic Vision 2008-2013 (Res. Conf. 14.2).

There are two principles here, both reflecting the natural world. The first is that natural systems are based on cycles, for example water, nitrogen and carbon. Secondly, there is very little waste in natural systems.

Ce document présente les expériences de six barrages construits en Afrique de l'Ouest entre la fin des années 1970 et la fin des années 1990 : Sélingué au Mali, Niandouba et Confluent au Sénégal, Moussodougou, Bagré et Kompienga au Burkina Faso. Des études rétrospectives ont été réalisées pour chacun d'eux et leurs conclusions ont été discutées lors d'ateliers nationaux multi-acteurs dans chacun des pays concernés.

This document examines the experiences of six dams built in West Africa between the late 1970s and late 1990s: the Niandouba and Confluent in Senegal, the Sélingué in Mali, and the Bagré, Kompienga and Moussodougou dams in Burkina Faso. Retrospective studies were conducted for each of these dams and their conclusions discussed in multi-stakeholder national workshops in each country.

This briefing discusses the human rights impact of conservation policies and the role of non-governmental and international conservation organizations in protecting human rights while supporting conservation initiatives. The article includes information relating to the Conservation Initiative on Human Rights and a description of the IUCN resolutions and recommendations regarding human rights and conservation.

In the last decade biodiversity loss and persistent poverty in developing countries have been recognised as major international problems that require urgent attention. However, the nature and scale of the links between these two problems, and between efforts to address them, has been the subject of much heated debate.
