This study explores the possibilities and challenges of the existing regional collaboration between Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia and Una National Park in Bosnia and Herzegovina, one of six pilot sites in the project Environment for People in the Dinaric Arc. The objective of the study is to survey the possibilities for transboundary conservation, i.e. establishment of transboundary protected areas and associated cooperation mechanisms.
This document is divided into three sections. The first examines learning on various aspects of natural resources governance. This is followed by a section focusing more specifically on project implementation, planning and management lessons. Finally, we conclude with some suggestions on possible future niches for IUCN in the natural resources (NR) governance arena.
Aggregate Industries UK, a subsidiary of Holcim, restores ecosystems as part of its quarrying operations. In support of a request to extend an existing quarry in North Yorkshire, the company proposed to create a mix of wetlands for wildlife habitat as well as an artificial lake for recreation, following the extraction of sand and gravel from land currently used for agriculture. Stakeholders were consulted to determine their preferences for restoration.
A knowledge management study was undertaken in the IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa Region by Rod Abson, Science and Knowledge Management Officer in the Science and Knowledge Management Unit of IUCN from the 18th of June to 1st of July 2011.
