Indigenous conservation territories and areas conserved by indigenous peoples and local communities — ICCAs for short — are the subject of an IUCN/CEESP Briefing Note launched at CBD SBSTTA in May 2010. This larger document provides the examples and analysis underlying the policy advice contained in that Briefing Note. The document can be read in conjunction with the Briefing Note or as a stand-alone, as main concepts are described again here.

Conservation for a New Era outlines the critical issues facing us in the 21st century, developed from the results of the World Conservation Congress in Barcelona in October 2008. With a large percentage of the world’s population moving to urban areas, clean, affordable and timely supply of drinking and domestic water to its residents has become a priority. In most cities of the world, the primary responsibility of supplying drinking and domestic water lies with public utilities that often suffer from a series of ailments like poor cost recovery, poor and intermittent supply, and deficit budgets.

Marine News is the IUCN Global Marine and Polar Programme e-newsletter. It includes news stories related to a diversity of marine-related topics such as climate change mitigation and adaptation; threatened marine species; energy and industry; marine protected areas; marine invasive species; fisheries and aquaculture; ocean governance and the Arctic. It also highlights recent marine expeditions and outstanding marine photographs.

The book illustrates that sacred natural sites, although often under threat, exist within and outside formally recognised protected areas, heritage sites. Sacred natural sites may well be some of the last strongholds for building resilient networks of connected landscapes. They also form important nodes for maintaining a dynamic socio-cultural fabric in the face of global change.

Intrinsically linked to biodiversity are four of humankind's greatest challenges and the four focus areas of the IUCN programme: climate change, energy, livelihoods and economics. The performance assessment at the end of the report shows progress against the planned annual results.
