Judges play a critical role in the development, enforcement and compliance with environmental law. To showcase the role of the judiciary in upholding the rule of law, IUCN organized a “Judiciary Day” at its 2004 World Conservation Congress in Bangkok. This publication contains papers and speeches covering some of the cutting-edge themes that were discussed.

Aquaculture is an important economic activity in coastal areas of many countries. It offers opportunities to alleviate poverty, boosts employment, helps community development, reduces overexploitation of natural coastal resources, and enhances food security. It is one of the fastest growing sectors within fisheries.

Informa de las acciones del Programa Alianzas de UICN con la participación de 200 organizaciones y 115 socios directos, durante sus dos primeros años de labores y con un nuevo modelo de gestión ambiental y de participación social. Las labores se desarrollaron en zonas fronterizas con importante biodiversidad y situaciones de pobreza, en comunidades de Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua y Panamá.

Vulnerability to natural disasters continues to increase, severely compromising the achievement of poverty alleviation goals in many developing countries. A more effective approach is needed to reduce the impacts of these disasters. This publication proposes an approach that integrates ecosystem management, development planning and risk reduction strategies to reduce disaster impacts and improve both livelihoods and biodiversity outcomes.

This book seeks to: 1.examine the political, economic, cultural, and ecological dimensions of food sovereignty 2.generate and exchange technically informed and practically applicable knowledge 3.provide an interactive space for the formation of cross-cultural alliances between the U.S. and Latin America among academics and practitioners.

With increasing demands on the water of the Pangani River Basin, coupled with a decreasing catchment runoff due to climate change, water resources are becoming increasingly scarce, and leading to conflicts among users.
