The Convention on biological diversity is an historic committment by the world's nations to conserve biological diversity, to use biological resources sustainably and to share equitably the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. It is the first global legal instrument to comprehensivly address all aspects of biological diversity. The guide illustrates the scientific, technical and legal issues which the Convention raises.

El análisis y la interacción con socios involucrados en transacciones relacionadas con servicios ambientales y políticas y leyes conexas en los últimos 10 años, han evidenciado una clara necesidad de comprender mejor los marcos jurídicos e institucionales que tienen el potencial de favorecer o entorpecer el desarrollo de regímenes de pagos por servicios ambientales (PSA), así como las complejas consideraciones jurídicas que afectan a los proyectos de servicios ambientales.

Esta publicación tiene por objeto ayudar a los funcionarios de gobierno a fortalecer su capacidad de negociación y promover la cooperación entre actores estatales en el ámbito de los recursos hídricos compartarget_idos. Pretende asimismo servir como herramienta para crear conciencia y desarrollar la capacidad de la sociedad civil a nivel nacional y local.

Analysis and engagement with partners working on ecosystem services transactions, policies and laws over the past 10 years have demonstrated a clear need to better understand the legal and institutional frameworks that have the potential to promote or hinder the development of payments for ecosystem services (PES) schemes, as well as the complex legal considerations that affect ecosystem services projects.

Fewer than 11% of CBD Parties have adopted substantive ABS law, and nearly all of these are developing countries, focusing almost entirely on the ‘access’ side of the equation. Most of the CBD’s specific ABS obligations, however, relate to the other side of the equation – benefit sharing. This book considers the full range of ABS obligations, and how existing tools in user countries’ national law can be used to achieve the CBD’s third objective.

This publication identifies and analyzes critical issues in the formulation and implementation of national and sub-national legal frameworks for REDD activities. It is based on substantive findings from four national case studies (Brazil, Cameroon, Guyana and Papua New Guinea) chosen for their varying geographies, forest cover and deforestation rates, and stages of REDD preparations.

Tras la primera edición de este libro en el 2006, fue necesario proyectar una segunda reimpresión debido a su alta demanda. En esta segunda ocasión se ha avanzado en el concepto de gobernanza de aguas compartarget_idas, y se exploran nuevas alternativas de cooperación interestatal e institucional que ofrece el derecho internacional para una buena gestión de las cuencas hidrográficas compartarget_idas.

The term “rights-based approach” (RBA) has been used in various contexts and defined in different ways. This publication applies the approach specifically in exploring the linkages between conservation and respect for internationally and nationally guaranteed human rights.
