Biodiversity conservation

As a contribution to clarifying the contested claims, IIED, UNEP-WCMC and the African Wildlife Foundation organised a symposium in April 2010. The purpose of the symposium was to explore the current state of knowledge and the evidence base for claims and counter-claims, in order to better understand what is assumption rather than fact.

As a policy research organisation, the International Institute for Environment and Development has evolved key concepts, theories and ways of working in sustainable development since 1973. The big idea we explore here is banking on biodiversity. This approach rests on the fact that much rural poverty is concentrated in the world’s biodiversity hotspots.

Der derzeit prognostizierte Klimawandel wird für Natur und Landschaft ebenso wie für die Landnutzung tiefgreifende, wenn auch noch nicht in allen Details und Konsequenzen absehbare Folgen haben. Im Rahmen des Forschungsvorhabens „Einfluss veränderter Landnutzungen auf Klimawandel und Biodiversität“ wurden umfassende Informationen zu den bereits feststellbaren und erwarteten Auswirkungen des Klimawandels zusammengetragen und in diesem Band veröffentlicht.

Today, it is generally accepted that socioeconomic issues play a pivotal role in determining the success of efforts aimed at the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. Yet there is still a great deal of incertitude as to how and to what extent these issues should be taken into account.

Terrestrische und semi-terrestrische Lebensräume an den Küsten von Nord- und Ostsee stehen im besonderen Maße im Spannungsfeld verschiedenster Nutzungsansprüche. Bemühungen zum Erhalt naturnaher Biotope konkurrieren in diesem Bereich u.a. mit Anforderungen des Hochwasserschutzes, des Tourismus und der Landwirtschaft. Betroffen ist auch eine ganze Reihe von Lebensraumtypen von europäischer Bedeutung.

This synopsis has been produced to highlight the core aspects of the first three volumes of Natural Capital of Mexico, which gives us an overview to identify priorities for future attention, new research areas and options for the conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity in Mexico.

This report considers the status and trends of pan-European biodiversity in a range of ecosystems, and the implications of these trends for biodiversity management policy and practice. It considers the key biodiversity policy instruments currently applied in Europe, the threats to biodiversity and the management implications of such threats across major habitat types.

Cet ouvrage collectif est un support pour l'enseignement et fait le point sur les recherches actuelles à l'interface entre la biodiversité et les enjeux de santé publique et vétérinaire, en réussant des chercheurs aux compétences et origines très variées: écologie, biologie de la conservation, épidémiologie, sociologie, économie, sciences politiques, et des professionnels de la santé, vétérinaire et humaine.
