Biological diversity

Madagascar is one of the most biologically diverse places on the planet; more than 80% of its species are not found anywhere else on Earth. However, this highly diverse flora and fauna is threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation and the island has been classified one of the world’s highest conservation priorities.

This study compares compensation approaches taken with respect to impacts on biological diversity in selected countries from four different continents: Africa, Asia, North America, and South America. Background on specific legal and institutional frameworks for each country are elaborated and assumptions for further research are formulated. 

Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) are important instruments for conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. CEPA provides the link from science and ecology to people’s social and economic reality. It supplies the oil for the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity and deals with the processes that motivate and mobilize individual and collective action.

La Lista de Patrimonio Mundial incluye 156 sitios que explícitamente son reconocidos por sus excepcionales valores en biodiversidad, y representan todos los principales ecosistemas del mundo. Sin embargo, aún existen áreas de excepcionales valores en biodiversidad que todavía no son parte de esta red de ‘sitios de Patrimonio Mundial por su biodiversidad’. Para abordar este tema, la UICN y el PNUMA-WCMC han creado este estudio temático global, con un enfoque en el ámbito terrestre.
