Vultures are a characteristic, distinctive and spectacular component of the biodiversity of the environments they inhabit. They also provide critically important ecosystem services by cleaning up carcasses and other organic waste in the environment. The IUCN Red List status of African-Eurasian vultures has seen drastic changes for the worse in recent years.
The final product is an impressive and voluminous book with more than 900 pages of maps of distribution for 495 European bird species, accompanying text and information on the population size estimates for key countries where it is present. The area covered includes all of Europe, including Madeira, the Azores, Iceland, Svalbard, Franz Josef Land and Transcaucasia) although not Turkey or Cyprus.
Seit 1987 gelten die Hoch- und Flachmoore in der Schweiz als geschützt, dank der Rothenthurm-Initiative. Die Moorlandschaft Nummer 1 Rothenthurm–Altmatt liegt im Kanton Schwyz und es ist mehr als verständlich, dass daraus eine besondere Verantwortung erwächst. Die Schwyzerische Naturforschende Gesellschaft nimmt diese Verantwortung wahr: Sie liefert mit der vorliegenden Publikation eine Übersicht zur Verbreitung, zum Zustand und zur steten Veränderung der Schwyzer Moore.
With 48 threatened bird species, and the highest number of breeding endemic bird species (11) in mainland Southeast Asia, Viet Nam is a global conservation priority. Many of these threatened species are hunted unsustainably for wildlife trade. Very little is known about the current true scale of the trade in Viet Nam as the most recent research was conducted in 2008.
