Biology and hatchery rearing of the silver therapon Leiopotherapon plumbeus

Known for its tasty flesh, silver therapon, locally known as ayungin, has been regarded to be one of the most valuable edible native freshwater species in the Philippines. Demands for this fish species remain high which caused the wild stock supply to decline. Due to this growing concern, a hatchery technique was devised by an AQD scientist to aid the deteriorating population of the species in the Philippine waters.

Biology and hatchery of mangrove crabs Scylla spp.

This manual includes the biology of the crab (Scylla serrata, S. tranquebarica, and S. olivacea), and describes principles and procedures for spawning the mature crabs and rearing the zoea to "fly" size crabs. It focuses on the hatchery rearing of S. serrata as the farming of this species is more economically viable than the two other species. This manual builds upon the 2nd edition of Biology and hatchery of mud crabs Scylla spp. published in 2008.

In vivo conservation of animal genetic resources

Conservation of animal genetic resources -- ensuring that these valuable resources remain available for future use by livestock breeders -- is one of the four strategic priority areas of the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources, which was adopted in 2007 and is the first internationally agreed framework for the management of biodiversity in the livestock sector. These guidelines focus on conservation "in vivo", i.e. maintaining live populations rather than storing frozen genetic material.

Assessment of python breeding farms supplying the international high-end leather industry

This report is the first one delivered under the Python Conservation Partnership. Established in November 2013, the Partnership aims to contribute to the improved sustainability of the python skin trade and to help facilitate industry-wide change. The present report provides information on how pythons are farmed in Asia, farming’s impact on local livelihoods and the relative contribution of captive python skins to the total trade.

Breeding strategies for sustainable management of animal genetic resources

Genetic improvement is an essential component of the management of animal genetic resources and can make important contributions to food security and rural development. Yet, the majority of developing countries have not been successful in sustaining breed development programmes. The objective of these guidelines is to help countries plan and develop effective genetic improvement programmes and to maximize the chances that such programmes will be sustained. They are intended for use by policy-makers and organizations involved in livestock development.
