The Endangered Roatán spiny-tailed iguana (Ctenosaura oedirhina) is found only on the islands of Roatán, Barbareta, and some surrounding cays. Although dense populations can be found in some privately protected locations, threats persist and management efforts are needed. The Roatán spiny-tailed iguana was first described in 1987 and since then informal and detailed studies have been conducted to better understand its biology and status.

There is growing recognition of the need for sport and sports events to be conducted in socially and environmentally responsible ways and this is reflected in the attitudes of governments, public authorities and regulators. This means that taking a proactive and diligent approach to environmental management is a vital part of the sport sector’s licence to operate as well as growing and sustaining fan bases.

The World Heritage thematic study for Central Asia has been produced as a contribution to supporting the implementation of the World Heritage Convention in Central Asia. It provides a response to a Decision of the World Heritage Committee in order to identify outstanding areas with potential for future nomination to the World Heritage List with primary focus on criteria (ix) and (x) at the regional scale.

In November 2018, Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted at the 14th Conference of the Parties a definition of an "other effective area-based conservation measure" (OECM) as well as guiding principles, common characteristics and criteria for identification of OECMs (CBD/COP/DEC/14/8). OECMs may be managed for many different objectives but they must deliver effective conservation.

Within a landscape of overlapping ecological, social and economic priorities, there exists a fundamental need to balance the land use dynamics of natural resource management with environmental and livelihood considerations. However, in striving to reach such a balance, people and local institutions are often excluded or forgotten.

The present volume should be read in conjunction with State of nature conservation systems in South-Eastern Europe as it represents its integral part and foundation. Both reports follow the same logic and structure, and their content is presented through the same thematic chapters.
