Conservation

This book explores the global conservation and management of sharks. There has been a rapid decline in populations of many shark species, while new science has emerged of the critical role they play in marine ecosystems. However, conservation law and policy have been slow to develop, with only a handful of iconic species being protected worldwide.

An eye-opening tour of the rare and exotic, The Kingdom of Rarities offers us a new understanding of the natural world, one that places rarity at the center of conservation biology.

The IUCN-SSC Crocodile Specialist Group conducted a review mission to Ethiopia from 26 April – 08 May 2014 to examine Ethiopia’s Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) conservation and management program and the status, and likely sustainability, of ranching and trophy hunting initiatives.

A companion volume to Keeping the Wild: Against the Domestication of Earth, Protecting the Wild provides a necessary addition to the conversation about the future of conservation in the so-called Anthropocene. Even as the biodiversity crisis accelerates, a growing number of voices are suggesting that protected areas are passé. Protecting the Wild offers a spirited argument for the robust protection of the natural world.

In response to the United Nations General Assembly resolution 2398 (XXIII), steps were taken by the Kenya Government early in 1971 to participate in the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972. In April 1971, a Working Committee on the Human Environment in Kenya was set up under the chairmanship of the Permanent Secretary for Natural Resources.

This short independent study focuses on the relationship between the extractive industries and natural World Heritage properties. It was commissioned through IUCN in conjunction with the World Heritage Centre, as well as the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and Shell; the latter two funded the exercise.

Le hotspot  (point chaud) de la biodiversité du bassin méditerranéen est bien connu pour l'importance que sa biodiversité revêt à l'échelle mondiale, mais l'importance de la biodiversité d'eau douce n'était pas reconnue précédemment. Dans le cadre de ce projet, les ZCB d'eau douce ont maintenant été identifées, cartographiées et validées dans une grande partie du hotspot méditerranéen.
