Conservation policy

This book describes the challenges that arise in studying and conserving biodiversity across different scales. It describes a wide range of practical methods and recommendations to improve conservation at continental and global scales. The book aims to bundle the main results of SCALES in a comprehensive manner and present it in a way that is usable not only for scientists but also for people making decisions in administration, management, policy or even business. 

A vast number of national parks and protected areas throughout the world have been established in the customary territories of indigenous peoples. In many cases these conservation areas have displaced indigenous peoples, undermining their cultures, livelihoods, and self-governance, while squandering opportunities to benefit from their knowledge, values and practices.

The Himalayas are the water tower of Asia and are a precious resource to be used wisely and protected for human welfare, research and eduction. This book, which consists of 18 articles, is aimed at practitioners, planners and researchers to be of use in the management, conservation and sustainable development of the Himalayan high altitude wetlands and their resources.

The aim of this research is to: 1) identify the negative impact of conservation policies implemented in living World Heritage sites on the social quality of traditional communities; 2) develop a design tool constraining spatial morphology to overcome the negative influences on the social quality The study leads to a new approach to conservation planning that takes into account sustaining social quality while enforcing UNESCO World Heritage conservation program.

Die Wasserrahmenrichtlinie (Water Framework Directive), die Fauna-Flora-Habitatrichtlinie (Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive) und die Vogelschutz-richtlinie (Birds Directive) sind wesentliche Säulen einer europäischen Umweltpolitik. Mit der Verabschiedung des UN-Übereinkommens über die biologische Vielfalt im Jahr 1992 und dem Bundesnaturschutzgesetz (BNatSchG) von 2002 hielt der Begriff „biologische Vielfalt“ Einzug in die Naturschutzkonzeptionen in Deutschland. Seine Bedeutung wird durch die Nationale Strategie zur biologischen Vielfalt, die im Jahr 2007 von der Bundesregierung beschlossen wurde, konkretisiert.
