Farming systems

Rethinking land in the Anthropocene

Land is the basis of human life. With climate change, the mass extinction of biological diversity and an often dysfunctional food system, we are experiencing three colliding global crises that are directly linked to the way we manage land. Yet the land and its biologically productive ecosystems are under more pressure than ever before.

Farming systems and poverty

Small farmers produce much of the developing world's food, yet they are generally much poorer than the rest of the population in these countries. This book looks in detail at some 20 farming systems that are judged to have the greatest potential for poverty and hunger reduction and economic growth in the next few decades, and asks the crucial question: What are likely to be the most successful strategies for small farmers in each system, and what sort of initiatives can best help farmers to realize them?

This book aims to celebrate from where no-till has come, and to advance the concept by sharing the latest information and knowledge from around the world. New frontiers and the most recent developments are discussed. One of the most significant of these is the expanding interest in how carbon accumulation in agricultural systems can both enable greater adaptation to climate change and contribute to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions.
