Forest ecosystems

IUCN’s Strengthening Voices for Better Choices (SVBC) project aims to promote the adoption of improved forest governance arrangements in Viet Nam and five other tropical forest countries in Asia, Africa and South America. This summary report is an output of a larger national study conducted by SVBC in Viet Nam.

This book, in English, French and Spanish, provides an overview of the Mediterranean forest conservation and management challenges posed by climate change. It addresses relevant issues, like forests’ vulnerability to climate change and past climate change responses which may guide future policies and actions.

Have you ever heard of cloud forests? These intriguing ecosystems only represent 2% of the world’s tropical forests. And yet, they are important treasure houses of biodiversity and suppliers of large volumes of high-quality stream-flow. However, these cloud forests are among the most threatened forest ecosystems in the work. In this film scientists try to unravel the secrets of these amazing ecosystems and understand how forest protection works in Costa Rica.

The socio-economic development plan for Sekong mentions increasing forest cover as one of its major objectives. This study focuses on natural regeneration (NFR) forests and what it would cost the country if NFR schemes were not undertaken. In a country where poverty alleviation is of prime importance, estimating the contribution of NTFP harvesting for sustaining livelihoods would demonstrate the importance of NFR schemes in achieving its poverty alleviation goals.
