Forest ecosystems

The colour of carbon matters. Green carbon is the carbon stored in the plants and soil of natural ecosystems and is a vital part of the global carbon cycle. This report is the first in a series that examines the role of natural forests in the storage of carbon, the impacts of human land use activities, and the implications for climate change policy nationally and internationally.

The mangrove ecosystem is amongst the worlds richest in terms of its biodiversity. In Fiji, there are eight tree species that make up the mangrove forest. Life on Fiji's Mangrove Trees is an Environment Science reader for school students in Fiji and other Pacific Islands. It is hoped that it will raise children's awareness and appreciation of the different living things that live on mangrove trees and the importance in preserving stands of mangroves.

This comprehensive review of forest biological diversity is an important contribution to the international debate on conservation and sustainable use of forest biodiversity. The review summarizes important scientific assessments and monitoring programmes of forest biological diversity, including broad-scale information about forest loss and studies on the effects of this loss to ecosystem functioning and consequently to ecosystem services.

This report considers the status and trends of pan-European biodiversity in a range of ecosystems, and the implications of these trends for biodiversity management policy and practice. It considers the key biodiversity policy instruments currently applied in Europe, the threats to biodiversity and the management implications of such threats across major habitat types.
