The report contextualises the current status of water quality and biodiversity in the Rio Doce watershed, providing selected data and information on the physical, chemical and biological quality of the water and an overview of the terrestrial, freshwater and marine biodiversity since the dam rupture.

The passing of the IUCN Resolution 041 (Development of objective criteria for a Green List of species, ecosystems and protected areas) at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Jeju Island, South Korea in September 2012 provided an important indication of government and NGO support for the principle of the Green Status of Species. However, there was no indication of what the GSS method would look like. Since then, those details have been worked out by technical specialists.

O aumento do risco de mudança climática deixa as comunidades do Rio Doce mais vulneráveis a eventos como inundações, deslizamentos de terra e erosão costeira, indicando a necessidade de políticas e investimentos para gerar resiliência institucional e social para a adaptação à mudança climática, principalmente no que diz respeito à saúde humana e à saúde dos ecossistemas.

Increased risk of climate change makes the communities in the Rio Doce more vulnerable to events, such as flooding, landslides and coastal erosion, indicating the need for policies and investments to build institutional and  societal resilience for climate change adaptation, particularly in regard to human and ecosystem health.

This pamphlet briefly introduces measures that are now taken by various stakeholders in Japan and contribute to achieving the proposed post-2010 biodiversity targets. Measures included in this pamphlet is not exhaustive, but selected by the government of Japan as ones expected to be interesting to other parties. 

This guide emphasizes the ecological goals that are nowadays set in every hydraulic engineering planning. It uses several examples to show how modern flood protection can create living rivers. The examples of successful river revitalization documented in this book are groundbreaking.

El Objetivo 15 de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) consiste en «proteger, restaurar y promover el aprovechamiento sostenible de los ecosistemas terrestres, la gestión sostenible de los bosques, la lucha contra la desertización, así como detener e invertir la degradación de los suelos y la pérdida de biodiversidad».

L’objectif de développement durable (ODD) n° 15 vise à : « Protéger, restaurer et promouvoir l’utilisation durable des écosystèmes terrestres, gérer durablement les forêts, lutter contre la désertification, stopper et inverser la dégradation des terres et la perte de biodiversité.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) continue to influence global development policy in the coming decade. Under SDG15, Target 15.3 calls to “combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, drought and floods, and strive to achieve a land degradation-neutral world” by 2030. As of May 2019, 122 countries committed to set national targets for a land degradation-neutral world (LDN).
