Species surveys

The endangered Andros iguana, Cyclura cychlura cychlura, is the largest native terrestrial vertebrate, and the only iguana (of 3 species) in the Bahamas that is not confined presently to small cays. The Andros iguana is unique to Andros Island and despite the recent formation of a national park on North Andros Island in 2002, the population is declining.

This publication summarises results for a selection of Europe's native species of vascular plants. In total 1,826 vascular plant species have been assessed from the following groups: species listed on European or international policy instruments, selected priority crop wild relatives, and aquatic plant species. Of those at least 467 species are threatened with extinction.

This publication summarises results for all of Europe's native species of freshwater fishes and lampreys. At least 37% of these species are threatened. Major threats include the over-abstraction of water, which in many cases is further exacerbated by increasing droughts due to climate change, pollution, and the introduction of alien species.

This second volume in the Handbook of the Mammals of the World series covers 17 families in six orders; although united here, their grouping as "hoofed mammals" is more practical than phylogenetic. Families detailed include aardvarks, hyraxes, elephants, pangolins, horses and relatives, rhinoceroses, tapirs, camels, pigs, peccaries, hippopotamuses, chevrotains, musk-deer, deer, hollow-horned ruminants, pronghorn, and giraffe and okapi.

This report describes a rapid assessment of Important Plant Areas in the south and east Mediterranean; a project designed to provide the ‘wild plant perspective’ for the regional investment strategy of the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund. The project partnership of IUCN, Plantlife International and WWF with botanical teams from Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia, Syria and Albania, was supported by the French Development Agency.

Le chimpanzé de Schweinfurth est classé “En danger” et est l’objet d’une attention particulière au niveau global pour sa conservation. Cette publication offre un plan sur 10 ans qui, s’il est appliqué de manière complète, permettra le maintien de populations viables du chimpanzé dans son aire de distribution existante. Les chimpanzés sont une excellente espèce phare pour la conservation.

Ce rapport présente une évaluation préliminaire des Zones importantes pour les plantes en Méditerranée méridionale et orientale, plus l’Albanie. Dix recommandations ont été formulées, qui contribueront à orienter les actions de conservation de la flore sauvage en Méditerranée. La mise en oeuvre effective de ces recommandations permettra d’améliorer à long terme l’environnement et la qualité de vie des habitants dans cette région unique.

An independent scientific review panel was formed under the auspices of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Survival Commission (SSC) to review the results of research on belugas (Delphinapterus leucas), or white whales, in the Sakhalin–Amur region of eastern Russia and to assess the sustainability of recent live-capture removals.
