Agrobiodiversity, which includes the diversity of plants, animals, fish, trees and microbes that are used directly or indirectly for food and agriculture, is the foundation of sustainable agricultural development. But demand has grown for new knowledge and skills to address the multifunctionality of sustainable agriculture and the interconnectedness of biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and human health.
Overall, this thesis contributes to the understanding how marketing can help to solve sustainability problems in pastoral areas, in particular the Horn of Africa. It also contributes to the extension of marketing theories from high income countries to informal economies in emerging markets. This research therefore informs marketing researchers that marketing theory is generalizable to the informal economies such as pastoralists in emerging markets.

Wo aber entstehen im Ökologischen Landbau überhaupt wesentliche Konflikte mit Naturschutzzielen und wo lohnt es sich, auf diese einzugehen? Welche Maßnahmen können die Lebensbedingungen der typischen Fauna und Flora der Agrarlandschaft langfristig erhalten und fördern?
The key message of this publication is that the occurrence of the global economic and financial crisis and the interrelated climate, food, and water crises offers a window of opportunity to embark on a path of more resilient and sustainable economic growth. The key challenge is to avoid responding to the crises with measures that perpetuate economically, socially and environmentally unsustainable production and consumption patterns.
