The report focuses on the harvest and trade controls for A. Malaccensis in key range countries, reviews available information on wider trade in agarweood and recommends actions required to tackle issues such as unsustainable harvesting and illegal trade.

Conifers are one of the world's most important resources of timber. If managed wisely and used sustainably, these resources will provide wood for a multitude of purposes, virtually indefinitely. Additional products include resins and their derivatives, and even medicinal extracts, for example taxol now used in the treatment of cancer. Conifers occur on all continents except Antarctica.

Summaries are provided on the conservation status of over 7,000 globally threatened tree species with the 1994 IUCN categories and criteria assigned. The conservation evaluations were carried out in association with members of the IUCN SSC Specialist Groups and a wide range of experts worldwide. The book concludes that 10 per cent of the world's trees are threatened with extinction and calls for a range of measures to reverse the trend of species loss
