Sub-Saharan Africa is one of the world's poorest regions and many people live by exploiting the natural resources of its rich wetlands. This book explores the relationships between hydrological an ecological functioning of these wetlands and documents the implications for resource availability, health and social welfare of water management, through the construction and operation of dams, embankments and diversions.
This work forms part of a preparatory phase leading to a handbook providing guidelines for the sustainable utlization and integrated management of tropical peatlands. The papers cover the resource and its conservation; social cultural and economic factors affecting utlization; forestry management approaches; case studies; and concludes with a summary of the workshop sessions focusing on future directions.

This very first directory of wetlands of one of the most arid zones on earth is intended to increase awareness among decision makers and planners of the consequences of wetland loss and degradation. It will also assist responsible authorities to identify new sites for listing under the Ramsar Convention. The directory consists of a series of national reports describing the principal wetlands in 13 countries.
