This publication is a report of the UCN/NRDC Workshop to Identify Areas of Ecological and Biological Significance or Vulnerability in the Arctic Marine Environment. The purpose of this workshop was to advance the process of identifying Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs) in the Arctic marine environment.
This paper contains a case study on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in the part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) that is located in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ). The purpose of this paper is to review the scope and functioning of applicable regional regimes and to identify if, and what kind of, regulatory and/or governance gaps exist. The case study complements and should be read in conjunction with the other three studies in this Marine Series.
This report provides a basis for development and implementation of a global system of marine protected areas to protect and manage representative examples of the world's rich marine biodiversity. It identifies priorities for establishing new marine protected areas and improving management of existing ones in each of the world's 18 major regions.
