Lao People's Democratic Republic

This report provides an overview of existing data about the wetlands, including its ecology, biodiversity, socio-economic values, management and threats. The bulk of the information presented in this report was gathered from project reports from key organizations working in the wetlands and surrounding areas over the past decade or so, as well as from documents prepared for the site’s nomination when Lao PDR joined the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance in 2010.

Although the rules regarding REDD have not been set, it is already clear that the extent to which an individual country will be able to attract international investment and REDD payments will depend to a considerable extent on its ability to put in place a system that rewards forest managers who are changing their behaviour to reduce deforestation and degradation.

The situation analysis studies assessed the current water governance frameworks encompassing policies, legal and regulatory frameworks, and institutional and decision-making aspects, for the three countries. The studies were used to assist the NWGs by identifying the key water governance issues for each country, providing recommendations on relevant dialogue topics for 2009 and 2010 and highlighting the scope for improving water governance.

South-east Asia is both a centre for the consumption of wildlife products, and also a key supplier of wildlife products to the world. Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR and Vietnam are among the south-east Asian countries that act as major sources of wildlife in trade, the trade involving a wide variety of native species, which, in many cases, are declining as a result of unsustainable, and often illegal, harvest.

Includes information on 1230 species of reptile, 433 species of mammal and 1212 species of bird taken by just two villages, often for food.
