IUCN’s Strengthening Voices for Better Choices (SVBC) project aims to promote the adoption of improved forest governance arrangements in Viet Nam and five other tropical forest countries in Asia, Africa and South America. This summary report is an output of a larger national study conducted by SVBC in Viet Nam. The study aimed to: i) identify policy, legal, institutional and economic obstacles to sustainable and equitable forest management at the local level; and ii) make recommendations for future SVBC activities.

This book, in English, French and Spanish, provides an overview of the Mediterranean forest conservation and management challenges posed by climate change. It addresses relevant issues, like forests’ vulnerability to climate change and past climate change responses which may guide future policies and actions.

This publication draws on lessons learned from Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea in forest management, community development, indigenous knowledge and access to resources and social networks within the broad framework of the sustainable livelihoods approach. The contents reveal how building workable partnerships among a diversity of stakeholders is fundamental to sustainable development. As the remaining forests rely on dynamic interconnections, so must governments, NGOs and the international community join to meet the challenges of our generation.

In this groundbreaking text, forest quality is discussed as a useful new concept in forest conservation and management. Three main assessment criteria are used: authenticity, environmental benefits, and social and economic benefits. A methodology and protocol for collecting and analysing data is described, and the approach needed with each indicator is outlined in detail. A landscape approach to assessment is advocated, as meeting conservation goals also means addressing human needs, and balancing the trade-offs involved is only possible at a landscape scale.

This study of contemporary timber trade has provided a revealing example of how governance shortfalls in the forestry sector can ultimately affect the prospects for achieving national economic growth and poverty objectives. Whilst numerous opportunities and benefits of timber trade have been, and continue to be, realized, this report illustrates how poor forestry governance directly undermines two clusters of the 2005 National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty (NSGRP)
