Conserving biological diversity in managed tropical forests : proceedings of a workshop held at the IUCN General Assembly, Perth, Australia, 30 November - 1 December 1990

At the meeting of the International Tropical Timber Organization held in Bali in 1990, ITTO adopted the target of ensuring that all tropical timber marketed internationally should, by the year 2000, come from forests that are managed sustainably. This study is an attempt to determine whether the member countries of the ITTO have a legal and administrative basis for managing their production forests in ways which will allow these forests to contribute to biological diversity conservation.

La Réserve de Conkouati, Congo : le secteur sud-ouest

Continuing on the same pattern as in the previous publication in the series, La Réserve de Conkouati, Congo : le secteur sud-est, the author has been coordinating activities of forests, wetlands and environmental impact assessment programmes around the Conkouati lagoon, which is of great interest to local Vili populations. This part of southern Congo has proved to be the richest in mammal populations and included a wide variety of ecosystems. A few trees and shrubs appear to be species new to science.

La Réserve de Conkouati, Congo : le secteur sud-est

IUCN has undertaken the first in-depth biological inventory of the south-east part of this reserve. This study gives a socio-economic picture of the local population, the Vilis, the Loumbous and the Pigmees Ibongo. Information is provided on higher plants, mammals and birds encountered, and lists are given of local food and magico-medicinal plants used by the local population. The last chapter promotes guidelines in terms of legislation, forest uses, oil exploration impact, and the development of sustainable activities for the region.

The management of tropical moist forest lands : ecological guidelines

A comprehensive guide to fundamental ecological principles in tropical moist forest lands. This edition has been revised to encompass our increased knowledge and understandings of the complexities of forest management. It addresses the cross-cutting issues: the effects of government policies, land allocation and infrastructure development in forest lands. An analysis is made regarding various forest uses: forests for wood, forests for agriculture and forests for nature conservation and environmental protection.
