Food safety in the new member states : implementation of the acquis communautaire and communication to farmers and consumers

Since 2004, the ten new Member States of the European Union found themselves in a new political and legal environment. After accession to the EU, the key task of the governments of the „ten” is to reach a balance between co-operation to introduce sustainable, efficient and effective policies dealing with consumer protection, sustainable development and food safety at the EU level on one hand; and on the other hand, to provide services and activities on national, regional and local levels, responding to the diverse social, ecological and economic situations in each Member State.

Etudes de l'UICN sur le Sahel : Sahel-Sahel une vision controversée

This report analyses the factors which motivate land use by rural populations and provides a context for any policy or strategy which addresses natural resource conservation in the Sahel. The author suggests that production systems in the Sahel have reached or even exceeded their capacity to respond to the needs of a growing population and further that development aid has only had a negligible impact on the trend to over exploit. It offers a different perspective on issues concerning the Sahel.

Ecosystems, livelihoods and disasters : an integrated approach to disaster risk management

Vulnerability to natural disasters continues to increase, severely compromising the achievement of poverty alleviation goals in many developing countries. A more effective approach is needed to reduce the impacts of these disasters. This publication proposes an approach that integrates ecosystem management, development planning and risk reduction strategies to reduce disaster impacts and improve both livelihoods and biodiversity outcomes.
