Marine protected areas (MPAs) across the MedPAN Network face common challenges, among them the lack of awareness and understanding of the impacts of invasive species, the scarcity of information on best management practices and a lack of baseline information, guidelines and trained local staff to identify and gather more information on the introduction, spread and impact of alien species.

In order to gain further experience on rights-based approaches (RBAs) to conservation, the project focused on undertaking a situation analysis in the Xe Champhone Ramsar Site in Lao PDR. It examined the under-researched issue of customary law governing natural resources, including its relationship with statutory law. This publication summarizes and analyses the findings of the field work.

Cette étude présente une évaluation des performances économiques de quelques activitésd’adaptation promues par l’Union internationale pour la conservation de la nature au Burkina Faso et au Ghana. L’objectif général de l’évaluation est de contribuer à l’apprentissage participatif sur les avantages économiques des initiatives d’adaptation au changement climatique.

This study presents an evaluation of the economic performance of some adaptation activities promoted by IUCN in Burkina Faso and Ghana. The overall objective of the evaluation is to contribute to participatory learning about economic benefits of climate change adaptation initiatives. Specifically, it aims at identifying and analyzing the content, scope and relevance of adaptation activities and evaluating the costs and benefits generated by such activities.

In 2011, the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) convened conservation partners to develop a conservation action plan for great apes in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with financial support from the Arcus Foundation. The main goal of this initiative was to identify critical threats to gorillas, chimpanzees and their habitats in the landscape, and to develop conservation strategies to address these threats.

Conventional approaches to managing protected areas have often seen people and nature as separate entities. They preclude human communities from using natural resources and assume that their concerns are incompatible with conservation. Protected area approaches and models that see conservation as compatible with human communities are explored. The main themes are co-managed protected areas and community conserved areas.
