These bylaws were developed through a consultative process involving stakeholders of the Building Drought Resilience (BDR) Project implemented by IUCN with funding from Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC). The goal of the bylaws is to support the sustainable management of land and water resources in the Lower Tana River Catchment through enhanced natural resource governance in order to build resilience of communities to drought.

This document provides information on the interdisciplinary situation analysis (ISA) workflow from start to finish with the intention of guiding the PiN team in making decisions about what information and procedures should be included and excluded and who to involve. This paper also makes suggestions as to the organization of the ISA report that marks the transition between PiN phases I and II.

The main purpose of this Study is to serve as contribution to policy review and reforms by documenting and analysing the existing schemes of governance of local forests in the region. Further, the methodology applied in this Regional Study and the experiences made are expected to contribute to the further development of the IUCN Nature Resource Governance Framework by providing practical test cases from a specific region.

The threatened species categories used in Red Data Books and Red Lists have been in place for almost 30 years. The IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria provide an easily and widely understood system for classifying species at high risk of global extinction, so as to focus attention on conservation measures designed to protect them.

The Mala (Lagorchestes hirsutus) is a little known but charismatic wallaby, rescued from imminent extinction in the 1980s when the last 22 animals were secured in predator-proof enclosures. The last mainland wild population perished in a wild fire in 1991. Mala numbers remain critically low, dispersed among six predator-free sites, isolated from each other and located in three different States and Territories.
