IUCN Secretariat contributions to externally published literature

This paper presents an ex-ante cost-benefit analysis of large-scale rangeland restoration through the Hima system within the Zarqa River Basin, drawing on experience from a pilot initiative by IUCN and the Jordanian Ministry of Agriculture since 2010. The ecosystem services that arise from rangeland restoration are valued using a combination of stated preference, avoided costs, replacement cost and market prices approaches.

This publication provides for the first time factual information on the status of medicinal plants in Europe. This assessment includes 400 vascular plants from ninety families, and the good news is it shows that only 2.4% of medicinal plants are threatened. The collection of plants from the wild was identified as the prime threat, and impacts from agriculture were identified as another important threat.

The UNESCO World Heritage List includes 217 properties recognized for their outstanding natural heritage values. Despite UNESCO estimating that up to a quarter of these World Heritage sites are under development pressure from existing and future activities of extractive industries, to date there is no reliable analysis of the extent of overlap on a global scale.

This book provides information for the identification of the fishes of Laos. All species known from Laotian waters to date are illustrated by colour photographs. Data on the known distributions and habitats are included, as well as indications on synonyms and previous misidentifications. 

Tiger populations worldwide are in tremendous pressure of extinction. Bangladesh, harboring one of the largest remaining populations of wild tigers in the vast areas of Sundarban mangrove forest, has therefore a great responsibility to protect this beautiful creature.
