Protected areas play a major role in reducing climate changing carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere. Fifteen percent of the world’s terrestrial carbon stock - 312 gigatonnes - are stored in protected areas around the world. Protected areas also serve as natural buffers against climate impacts and other disasters, providing space for floodwaters to disperse, stabilizing soil against landslides and blocking storm surges. And protected areas can keep natural resources healthy and productive so they can withstand the impacts of climate change and continue to provide the food, clean water, shelter and income communities rely upon for survival.

   

This is a report of a range of activities happened in the Pacific during the Year of Biodiversity (PYoB) 2010. It contains the PYoB in pictures, SPREP's work in 2010, initiatives and knowledge products launched during the year.

Este libro articula claramente, por vez primera, cómo las áreas protegidas contribuyen significativamente a reducir los impactos del cambio climático y qué es lo que necesitarían para contribuir más. Le présent rapport expose clairement, et pour la première fois, à quel point les aires protégées contribuent à diminuer les effets des changements climatiques et ce qu’il faudrait faire pour qu’elles y contribuent encore plus. Au moment où nous nous engageons dans des négociations sans précédent au sujet du climat et de la biodiversité, il est impératif que les décideurs comprennent ces messages de façon nette et précise et qu’ils contribuent à l’élaboration de politiques fructueuses et à l’instauration de mécanismes de financement efficaces.

   

Les principaux objectifs de ce Manuel de référence sont : aider les gestionnaires et les autorités gérantes des biens du patrimoine mondial culturel et naturel à réduire les risques qu’encourent ces biens en lien avec des catastrophes naturelles et anthropiques; illustrer les principes majeurs de la gestion de risques liés aux catastrophes (GRC) sur le patrimoine et définir une méthodologie permettant d’identifier, d’évaluer et d’atténuer les risques liés aux catastrophes; expliquer comment préparer un plan GRC fondé sur cette méthodologie; mettre en évidence le rôle positif que le patrimoine peut jouer dans la réduction des risques liés aux catastrophes, justifiant ainsi la conservation de biens du patrimoine mondial; indiquer comment intégrer des plans GRC pour des biens du patrimoine dans des stratégies et des plans, nationaux et régionaux, de gestion des catastrophes.

   

The objectives of this manual are: to help the managers and management authorities of cultural and natural World Heritage properties to reduce the risks to these properties from natural and humanmade disasters; to illustrate the main principles of Disaster Risk Management (DRM) for heritage and a methodology to identify, assess and mitigate disaster risks; to explain how to prepare a DRM plan based on this methodology; to demonstrate that heritage can play a positive role in reducing risks from disasters; and to suggest how DRM plans for heritage properties can be integrated with national and regional disaster management strategies and plans.

   

This study focuses on livestock production systems in Africa, as African livestock owners are thought to be among the most vulnerable populations on earth. Yet, livestock also has potential to strengthen resilience to climate change, as livestock production systems tend to be more resilient than crop based systems. This scoping study is a welcome addition to the climate change adaptation literature as it addresses a dimension frequently ignored in climate change adaptation studies. It explicitly stresses the resilience of livestock production systems to drought and the associated potential to use livestock to adapt to climate change. The study clearly dissects the various aspects of climate change and their impacts on the biological and socio economic aspects of the various African livestock production systems. In doing so, it appropriately stresses the differences between modern industrial systems and pays particular attention to impacts on the various traditional livestock production systems in Africa. The study then reviews traditional coping strategies. It also discusses a number of innovative social, technical and management interventions that might be considered to increase the resilience of livestock production systems to climate change. The final chapter then provides an overview of the steps to be taken to increase the resilience of livestock production systems and livestock dependent livelihoods to climate change.

The report describes the best possible climate scenarios for the middle of the 21st century for the Pangani Basin, utilising a range of General Circulation Models (GCMs) and a state of the art statistical downscaling procedure. This should enhance understanding on the implications of future climate change on the water resources of the Basin for pragmatic planning.

   

Scientific evidence suggests that variations in temperature, weather patterns and sea level will impact coastal ecosystems and communities. This easy to use four step guide has been developed to help coastal project managers effectively address the potential impacts of climate change and enhance the resilience and adaptive capacity of projects.

   

Il se fonde sur la version des "Orientations devant guider la mise en oeuvre de la Convention du patrimoine mondial" datée de janvier 2008, dont il se veut le complément. En particulier, le manuel vise à aider les États parties à mettre en oeuvre la Convention du patrimoine mondial et à les guider et à les informer de telle façon que la Liste du patrimoine mondial soit crédible et regroupe des biens présentant une valeur universelle exceptionnelle et convenablement gérés. Selon les voeux du Comité du patrimoine mondial et des États parties, le présent manuel tente d’assister ces derniers pendant les toutes premières étapes du travail de recherche – en amont de la présentation d’une proposition d’inscription en vue de son examen officiel. En tant qu’organisations appelées à prendre part à cet examen, l’UICN et l’ICOMOS ne peuvent pas intervenir directement dans l’élaboration d’une proposition d’inscription particulière. On compte toutefois que ce manuel aidera les États parties à examiner attentivement les implications de la décision de présenter une proposition d’inscription sur la Liste du patrimoine mondial, et les mesures à prendre pour faire en sorte que cet effort soit utile pour la conservation du bien comme pour le bien-être des communautés locales et des autres parties prenantes.

   

The manual is based on the version of the "Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention" dated January 2008 and seeks to complement it. In particular, the manual seeks to support States Parties in implementing the World Heritage Convention and to provide guidance and knowledge that will help to ensure a credible World Heritage List of well-managed properties of Outstanding Universal Value. As requested by the World Heritage Committee and States Parties, it is an attempt to support States Parties at any early stage of the research process – upstream of the point at which a nomination is submitted for formal evaluation – as the Advisory Bodies evaluating nominations, ICOMOS and IUCN, cannot work directly on the preparation of specific nominations. However, it is hoped that the manual will help States Parties to carefully consider the implications of proceeding with World Heritage nominations and take the necessary steps to ensure that the effort is worthwhile for both the conservation of the property and the well-being of local communities and other local stakeholders.

This document is a proposal to Holcim Ltd. to establish a Biodiversity Management System (BMS) for its worldwide operations and to implement it in a consistent and professional manner, by creating the necessary instruments and making appropriate provisions to integrate biodiversity considerations into policy, strategic and operational processes. The principal purpose of the BMS is to include biodiversity systematically in all planning and operational processes and amend relevant existing guidelines accordingly. The proposed BMS aims to insert biodiversity concerns at three levels of the company business: policy, strategic planning and environmental management and operational levels. Whilst this BMS report covers the first two levels, the third level will be addressed in the proposed management handbooks and guidelines to be prepared by Holcim.

   

Le projet MEDITERRANE-ON: “Définition d'indicateurs de durabilité dans l'aquaculture méditerranéenne” a pour but de concevoir des outils, sous la forme d'indicateurs, qui permettent de diagnostiquer l'état de l'aquaculture dans la région, en tenant compte de la perspective d'aligner les différents pays qui l'intègrent vers un développement de leurs secteurs aquacoles si possible plus durable. Cet outil a pour objectif d'être d'une grande utilité pour tous les acteurs du secteur; les administrations, les secteurs productifs, les communautés scientifiques, les ONG et tous les autres secteurs impliqués, permettant ainsi l'obtention d'une première évaluation de l'aquaculture méditerranéenne du point de vue de sa durabilité.

   

This text looked to design tools, in the form of indicators, which enable an analysis of the state of aquaculture in the region to be made with the aim of moving the various countries that make up the region towards an even more sustainable aquaculture development. These tools aim to be of use to all the stakeholders involved in the sector; administrations, producing sectors, scientific communities, non-governmental organizations and other sectors and stakeholders, in order to obtain an initial assessment of Mediterranean aquaculture from a sustainability point of view.

   

El proyecto MEDITERRANE-ON: Indicadores de Sostenibilidad en Acuicultura Mediterránea para el Área Mediterránea, tiene la voluntad de avanzar en el diseño de las herramientas, en forma de indicadores, que permitan realizar un diagnóstico del estado de la acuicultura de la región, considerando la perspectiva de alinear a los distintos países que la integran hacia un desarrollo, si cabe más sostenible de sus sectores acuícolas. Esta herramienta, pretende ser de utilidad para todos los agentes que integran el sector; administraciones, sectores productivos, comunidades científicas, organizaciones no gubernamentales, y otros sectores implicados, posibilitando la obtención de una primera valoración acerca de la acuicultura mediterránea desde el punto de vista de su sostenibilidad.

   

This IUCN-led Regional Conservation Strategy for wild cattle and buffalo species is the first step in a programme to develop National Conservation Action Plans for all wild cattle and buffalo species across their geographic ranges. This Regional Conservation Strategy, which was initiated at an international workshop held in Vietnam in June 2008, is the result of a collaboration between national wildlife authorities from South-east Asia and the IUCN/SSC Asian Wild Cattle Specialist Group in partnership with the Wild Cattle Conservation Project in Vietnam (CIRAD, National Institute of Animal Husbandry of Vietnam, Cat Tien National Park), the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), and the Earthwatch Institute. This report is structured as follows: background information and threats to Asian wild cattle and buffaloes, and introduction to the workshop are outlined in Chapter 2; the status and distribution data compiled at the workshop is summarized in Chapter 3; the threats are described in Chapter 4; and the conservation strategy developed by the workshop participants is described in Chapter 5 and presented as a logframe in Appendix 4 (A logframe or logical framework is a matrix and is used as a management tool to improve the design of intervention).

   

The Pangani River Basin Management Project (2005-2010) has generated technical information (packaged in the reports appearing on this CD). The project consisted of an integrated flows assessment, strengthening water governance and community participation, assessing vulnerability to climate change and promoting appropriate adaptations and supporting integrated water management planning for the basin.

The Global Study into management effectiveness evaluation was conducted between late 2005 and 2010. In cooperation with many people across the world, we aimed to strengthen the management of protected areas by compiling the existing work on management effectiveness evaluation, reviewing methodologies, finding patterns and common themes in evaluation results, and investigating the most important factors leading to effective management. The aim of the Global Study into protected area management effectiveness was to strengthen management of protected areas by pulling together the good work on this subject, helping the conservation community to share experiences and to find common themes in the study results.
