While some argue that trade liberalization has raised incomes and led to environmental protection in developing countries, others claim that it generates neither poverty reduction nor sustainability. The detailed case studies in this book demonstrate that neither interpretation is correct, given how much depends on specific policies and institutions that determine ‘on-the-ground’ outcomes. Drawn from research around the developing world, the authors present the unique perspectives of both the world’s largest development organization (The World Bank) and the world’s largest conservation organization (The World Wildlife Federation) on the debate over trade liberalization and its effects on poverty and the environment.

This guide discusses options to structure investment contractsin ways that maximise the investment's contribution to sustainable development. The focus is on foreign investment in the natural resource sector and on lower- and middle-income countries. The guide draws on test trainings in Ghana and Central Asia and aims to provide up-to-date and comprehensive learning material for both host governments and civil society. It can be used as a background document for training sessions, but it may also be used by readers accessing the material on their own. The guide tackles several interlinked topics, each representing a (set of) key lever(s) for sustainable development in investment contracts: choice among, and framing of, contract models to maximise sustainable development outcomes; tools to maximise the economic benefits to the host country; tools to balance economic with social and environmental considerations; stabilisation and renegotiation clauses; dispute settlement; and confidentiality provisions. The guide also provides an overview of relevant legal frameworks, highlighting how investment contracts can only be properly understood if read in conjunction with a wider range of applicable legal instruments, and briefly discusses the contracting process -- namely the negotiation and management of investment contract. Finally, the guide provides background material for a role-play to apply the concepts discussed in the more theoretical sections.

Although anthropologists and cultural geographers have explored "place" in various senses, little cross-cultural examination of "kinds of places", or ecotopes, has been presented from an ethno-ecological perspective. In this volume, indigenous and local understandings of landscape are investigated to better understand how human communities relate to their terrestrial and aquatic resources. The contributors go beyond the traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) literature and offer valuable insights on ecology and on land and resouces management, emphasizing the perception of landscape above the level of species and their folk classification. Focusing on the ways traditional people perceive and manage land and biotic resources within diverse regional and cultural settings, the contributors address theoretical issues and present case studies from North America, Mexico, Amazonia, tropical Asia, Africa and Europe.

This guide was developed to help address issues regarding resource consumption and environmental conservation, efficiency and competitiveness in enterprise management, and sustainable consumption and production. The case studies highlighted offer an ideal starting point in understanding the full environmental implications of products. This guide shows how a life cycle approach can be used to identify and reduce the environmental and health impacts of the products we use. It underlines the importance of considering these issues across the entire life cycle of a product and sets them within the context of policy development, business design and innovation. The information in this brochure is aimed at helping both the public and private sectors make more informed decisions to achieve better environmental outcomes. This in turn contributes to delivering our common environmental objectives through better policies, business strategies, product design and better customer choice.

Includes discussion of the conservation activities relating to "les hêtraies du Luzulu-Fagetum", "les phoques" (including Phoca vitulina and Halichoerus grypus), "la cistude d'Europe (Emys orbicularis) and "les grands carnivores" (including Canis Lupus and Ursus arctos).

Examines the process for the delineation of the outer continental shelf and speculates on the location and feasibility of extraction of the various non-living resources which may occur in these areas.

This report examines Ireland’s progress since the previous OECD Environmental Performance Review in 2000. It analyses the extent to which Ireland has met its national objectives and international commitments regarding the management of the environment and natural resources since the previous review. Many positive achievements are recorded that will be of interest to those seeking to identify efficient and effective means to achieve environmental policy goals. The report also contains 38 recommendations to encourage further environmental progress in Ireland. This book is part of the OECD Environmental Performance Review Programme, whereby all OECD countries are engaged in reviewing each others’ progress in achieving their environmental policy objectives. The analysis and recommendations are supported by a broad range of economic and environmental data.

Aggregate Industries UK, a subsidiary of Holcim, restores ecosystems as part of its quarrying operations. In support of a request to extend an existing quarry in North Yorkshire, the company proposed to create a mix of wetlands for wildlife habitat as well as an artificial lake for recreation, following the extraction of sand and gravel from land currently used for agriculture. Stakeholders were consulted to determine their preferences for restoration. In collaboration with IUCN, ecosystem valuation was undertaken to assess the types and scale of economic benefits associated with wetland restoration.

This guidance sets out the suggested procedures for compiling retrospective Statements of Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) and for submitting them for approval by the World Heritage Committee. It aims to show that the process should be manageable for most properties using the materials available at the time of inscription, and that the outcome is of great benefit to all those involved in the protection, management and promotion of World Heritage properties, and to the World Heritage Committee and the Advisory Bodies. Based on this Guidance, the Advisory Bodies and World Heritage Centre aim to provide support and advice to States Parties on preparing retrospective Statements of OUV, when requested.
