Deforestation and forest degradation are two of the main causes of the progressing loss of terrestrial biodiversity and are continuing at an alarming rate worldwide, especially in tropical countries. The underlying drivers of forest destruction vary from region to region, but can be linked mainly to human activities such as land use pressure and related policies. The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) considers protected areas (PA) as a cornerstone in its strategy for reducing the current loss of species and habitats in all types of ecosystems and therefore calls for a global PA network. Recognising the unsatisfactory spatial coverage and degree of effectiveness of existing PA in forests (FPA), the 9th Conference of the Parties to the CBD (COP9) reconfirmed the importance of national and regional FPA networks and the sustainable financing of FPA. Forests require particular attention regarding conservation due to their exceptional biodiversity, large cover area and their role in the adaptation and mitigation of global climate change. The present report has the objective of supporting the implementation of the recent COP9 decision on FPA through scientific analyses and practical policy-advice. Based on the evaluation of existing concepts for the selection, management and financing of FPA, it develops recommendations for the creation of a global FPA network. The character of the proposed network is discussed and suggestions are made for its realisation under the CBD, in particular concerning FPA selection, financing mechanisms and implementation.

The report on the environment of Andalusia is the most consolidated annual environmental information resource in our Autonomous Community, constituting as well an important reference within Spain and the European countries. This report summary presents the main elements of the original document, adapting them to a fast and easy reading, in order to favour the access and distribution of the environmental information generated in Andalusia.

The starting point of the present study is the fact that the quality of biotopes in Switzerland that are nationally protected is deteriorating and some are also shrinking in size. There are nearly 6000 biotopes in Switzerland, covering about 2% of the country's surface area. They belong to five categories: raised bogs, fens, floodplains, dry meadows and pastures, and spawning areas for amphibians. The declining quality and quantity of biotopes may be due to insufficient funding to ensure their protection and maintenance. Nine different cost categories, ranging from contracts with land owners to maintenance and performance reviews, were used to calculate the costs of providing legal biotope conservation. The annual costs were estimated to amount to between148 and 183 million Swiss francs. A further 697 to 1427 million Swiss francs would be needed to restore heavily damaged biotopes. Estimates varied, depending on what measures were assumed to be needed. The estimated annual cost of conserving Swiss biotopes is twice the current expenditure.

The working conference had as its principal theme to learn about the science of adaptation and mitigation, and related issues of biodiversity conservation issues in the context of United Nations' climate change negotiations.

The focus of the Windhoek conference was a sharing of experiences of how mapping and other participatory applications of geo-spatial information technology (GIT) can help empower indigenous peoples and rural communities to protect biodiversity and the natural resources on which they are reliant.

This report documents the discussions and conclusions of the Technical Workshop that was held to evaluate the current limitations in the monitoring of the shark fisheries and the trade in shark products and to recommend strategies for improving the situation. The Technical Workshop was held in Rome from 3 to 6 November 2008 and was funded by the Japan-funded Trust Fund Project on "CITES and commercially-exploited aquatic species, including the evaluation of listing proposals".

This study looks at natural disasters and forced displacement in the context of climate change. It has two aims: firstly, to provide an estimate of forced displacement related to disasters in 2008, specifi cally climate-related disasters; and secondly, to propose a methodology that could be applied to monitor disaster-related displacement on an ongoing basis. The study uses existing data sets on the impacts of natural disasters in 2008, crossreferences various sources, and individually investigates a number of events to estimate the numbers of persons displaced by disasters in 2008.

This report presents a biogeographic classification for global open ocean and deep sea areas (GOODS). It has been compiled by an international expert group initiated at a workshop held in Mexico City, Mexico, in January 2007, and is based on the input of many scientists and managers. It has been made available to meetings of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the UN Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (the UN Working Group). This classification covers open oceans and deep seabed with an emphasis on areas beyond national jurisdiction. Open ocean and deep seabed are non-legal terms commonly understood by scientists to refer to the water column and seabed beyond the continental shelf.

Animals need adequate resources so that their populations not only survive but thrive. So they seek places that can best provide them. Yet, they face several challenges, while obtaining these resources, e.g., predators, competitors and physical obstacles: mountains and rivers. Some animals are better-equipped to overcome these challenges, and are widely distributed, while others are not. These differences generate uneven pattern of distribution of life on earth. Tsewang Namgail’s study on the mammalian herbivores in the arid regions of the Himalayan mountains shows that interspecific competition is a major factor determining distribution and diversity patterns of these animals. Topography is also an important factor determining their coexistence, and thus it plays a crucial role in the formation and maintenance of herbivore assemblies in these drier, alpine regions. The study highlights that herbivores change their diet spectrum in response to the number of other herbivore species in an assemblage, and therefore emphasizes the inclusion of interspecific interactions in species distribution models.

During the past several years, biofuels in rich countries have come to be regarded as an important option for reducing consumption of petroleum, which is a main policy goal as a result of recent high oil prices, energy security concerns, and global climate change. The use and development of alternative sources of energy are increasingly encouraged in western countries, and private and public sources of financial support for biofuels development have increased greatly. For African countries, this is leading to growing interest from western and Asian private investors in biofuels projects, as well as growing support from development partners for incorporating biofuels into government policies and development plans. For African countries which are non-oil producers, biofuel production has the potential to provide a substitute for costly oil imports which are one of the major uses of foreign exchange and sources of inflation in African economies, and to provide a new source of agricultural income in rural areas. Tanzania is one of the African countries which have seen a rapid increase in biofuel production and investment proposals during the past several years. The purpose of this report is to describe existing patterns of biofuel development and crop cultivation in Tanzanian rural areas in order to improve the understanding of how these various potential threats and opportunities from biofuels expansion are playing out in reality.
