Managing seagrasses for resilience to climate change

Seagrasses are flowering plants that thrive in shallow oceanic and estuarine waters around the world. Although there are only about 60 species of seagrasses worldwide, these plants play an important role in many shallow, near-shore, marine ecosystems. There is growing evidence that seagrasses are declining globally because of anthropogenic impacts. This paper presents an overview of seagrasses, the impacts of climate change, and other threats to seagrass habitats. Finally, it proposes tools and strategies for managers to help support seagrass resilience.

Groundwater is the earth's largest accessible store of fresh water. The volume is almost 100 times that of surface water. In recent decades use of groundwater has grown exponentially. Over 2 billion people depend on it for their daily supply. Not only have population increases and economic growth laid claim to an ever larger share of groundwater, but the quality of the resource is also increasingly under strain. This book provides ideas on different aspects of groundwater management, ranging from areas where there is an abundance of groundwater to areas where the resource is scarce. It is aimed at various players faced with challenges in groundwater management, practitioners from local and central governments, non-governmental organizations, groundwater management projects and the users themselves.

Seagrasses and sand dunes

Seagrass meadows and sand dunes are lesser known coastal ecosystems that are located landward from coral reefs and sometimes seaward from mangroves. (At other times mangroves lie between seagrasses and sand dunes.) These ecosystems are also important for coastal communities because of the services they provide and are critical components of a vital, interdependent and interconnected series of coastal ecosystems. The format of this booklet is the same as for the first two booklets, and describes both ecosystems, where they are found, their importance and the threats imposed by anthropogenic activities. Again, this booklet, like the first two in the series, is targeted at the general public and decision-makers and is written in simple language.
For nature and people : a helping hand to rise from the debris

In the wake of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, four organizations, Both ENDS, World Wide Fund for Nature, Wetlands International and IUCN Netherlands Committee, implemented “Green Coast: for nature and people after the tsunami”, to assist the tsunamiaffected countries in Asia: India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Malaysia. The overall goal of the project was to recover and support local livelihoods in the tsunami-affected regions through the rehabilitation and sustainable management of coastal ecosystems. Using case studies, this publication provides an overview of the projects implemented under this initiative.
Best practice guidelines for surveys and monitoring of great ape populations

This book (published in French) consists of nine articles written by environmental lawyers from the region, regrouped around three themes: Chapter I deals with “convergences and divergences of national legal frameworks”, and provides illustrations from a number of countries and subjects; Chapter II considers a selection of legal frameworks for three types of ecosystems (forests, a river basin, and marine and coastal areas); Chapter III considers the implementation of international law and regional integration, as well as the revised African Convention on the conservation of nature and natural resources as a new framework for integrated development of environmental law in Africa. An introduction and a conclusion place these contributions in their international and regional context. The publication is the result of a joint UNEP-IUCN project.
Transition to sustainability : towards a humane and diverse world

The environmental movement has made huge progress over the last decades. Among others, it has raised awareness of challenges facing humanity, helped develop a critical mass of policies, and worked towards the implementation of many of these policies in collaboration with other stakeholders. Now, however, we are at a turning point in the history of the global environmental movement. In order to rise to challenges of the 21st century such as climate change and peak oil it will not be possible to do business as usual; a step change will be needed. As IUCN celebrates its 60th anniversary, and marks six decades of global conservation achievement, it is also taking stock of the urgent challenges facing life on earth and reviewing its strategies. The key to future conservation action will lie in reconciling the needs of the environment with those of society in a manner which is equitable and just, and in promoting sustainable lifestyles and livelihoods as well as protecting endangered species and spaces. This document outlines IUCN's Future of Sustainability initiative, the rationale for its implementation and describes how the conservation movement can play new and decisive roles in the transition to sustainability.

It noted that their vulnerability is exacerbated by natural disasters and their socioeconomic conditions.

Threatened amphibians of the world

Threatened Amphibians of the World is a visual journey through the first-ever comprehensive assessment of the conservation status of the world's 6,000 known species of frogs, toads, salamanders, and caecilians.
