Protected areas have proven themselves to be an effective tool for the conservation of biodiversity in situ. However, conserving biodiversity, even in protected areas, is a challenging assignment for most countries around the world where governments and local communities are often in competition for access to and use of resources. On top of these challenges, the world is facing changes in climate and sea level, increasing numbers of invasive species, and fragmentation of forests. People are demanding more food and fibre, while human settlement patterns press protected area boundaries. New institutional policies require new social arrangements among communities and government bureaus. Through a selection of field learning sites and case studies, this report presents a synthesis of lessons learned and invites readers to investigate areas of interest in more depth.

Islands are among the richest, most diverse ecosystems on the planet. Today, in the face of growing threats such as climate change, they are also among the most vulnerable. In early 2006 IUCN launched an initiative to explore options for ecosystem management and restoration in small island developing states (SIDS). The initiative examined the socioeconomic and environmental challenges facing islands, and the efforts over the past 20 years within the international community to address these challenges. This report is the result of this effort.

This book provides a systematic analysis of the requirements of access law, both the CBD requirements and the basic requirements of enforceable legislation. Often key legal issues that have a significant impact on enforceability of ABS agreements are not addressed in national legislation, therefore, this book addresses these issues with the aim to recognize and understand the nature of the legal impediments that must be addressed for the drafting of functional ABS legislation. Although the book is premised on the issues of access, it inevitably refers to corresponding issues of benefit sharing that are relevant for articulating the legal principles that inform a functional ABS system. Its conclusions look at particular legal concepts that, if accepted, could form the basis for functional ABS systems that respond to the identified concerns.

Mangroves are among the most important ecosystems on the planet. They provide food and protection for a huge variety of marine and land-based species, sustain livelihoods of coastal populations, and provide protection from ocean swell and extreme weather events. Today, however, the world’s mangroves are under threat from several sources including coastal development and the impacts of climate change. This document, the second in a series of booklets on coastal ecosystems, is aimed at the general public, as well as decision-makers and coastal developers. It provides an overview of the world’s mangroves, a description of the threats to which they are subject and a summary of some of the actions being undertaken to protect them.

The challenge of building biodiversity business is not trivial. Biodiversity is still largely neglected by private finance. There is a need to develop new business models and market mechanisms for biodiversity conservation, and to persuade the public and policy makers that biodiversity (or component ecosystem services) can be conserved on a commercial basis. Based on extensive consultation and analysis, the authors of this new report conclude that there are numerous pro-biodiversity business opportunities that can generate positive financial returns as well as real biodiversity benefits.

This new series of publications on the values of Protected Landscapes and Seascapes is intended to document and spell out the various environmental, economic, social and cultural values that Category V protected areas can provide. The first volume addresses the topic of agrobiodiversity. Since they are lived-in, working landscapes, Category V protected areas would appear to provide a potential mechanism for conserving agrobiodiversity. Through the use of case studies, this volume seeks to determine the value of Category V protected areas in the conservation of agrobiodiversity, and what lessons can be learnt from experience in this regard.

From tainted pet food to toxic toys, Americans can thank the successful lobbying efforts of the U.S. chemical industry for the secret ingredients in everyday products that have been linked to rising rates of infertility, endocrine system disruptions, neurological disorders, and cancer. In Exposed: The Toxic Chemistry of Everyday Products and What's at Stake for American Power, investigative journalist Mark Schapiro takes the reader to the front lines of global corporate and political power, where tectonic battles are being waged that will determine the physical and economic health of our children and ourselves.

This study aims to review major issues in the measurement of human capital and present some empirical measures of human capital for India. Education is an important component of economic activity, although investment in education is only one of the many forms of investment in human capital. The main objective of this monograph is to provide empirical estimates of the educational capital formation in different Indian states.

This monograph first describes the popular types of accounting usually followed in case of freshwater resources. Second, it reviews some fo the successful examples of accounting done in select countries from all over the world and focuses on lessons learnt from doing such an exercise in a developing country like India. Third, the change in the quality of water over the period 1993-2003 has been computed for surface water and groundwater. Fourth, the deviation from the national standard (acceptable limit) has been calculated. Fifth, the costs of necessary intervention on account of incremental pollution from the acceptable limit have been estimated. And finally, they have been adjusted against the net state domestic product for Indian states and union territories.

It is generally accepted that human emissions of greenhouse gases upset the thermal balance of earth-atmosphere system and ultimately lead to global climate changes. The extent of the changes will depend on future emissions of greenhouse gases and will vary between the Earth's different regions. But a central estimate for the Nordic region is that, by 2100, the temperature will have increased by about 3 degrees C, average rainfall will be 10% higher and the sea level may have raised 40cm. Such changes will have an influence on the production of renewable energy, which plays an increasingly important role in the Nordic countries. At the same time, the increase in temperature will have an effect on the amount of energy consumed, mainly in the form of a reduction of energy used for heating. A Nordic Energy Research project with a series of subprojects was initiated to study these impacts.
