Forest landscape restoration (FLR) provides a complementary framework to sustainable forest management and the ecosystem approach in landscapes where forest loss has caused a decline in the quality of ecosystem services.  This book has been written by a team of experts from a wide variety of institutions coordinated by ITTO and IUCN. It explains the FLR concept and describes its main elements in chapters on adaptive management, landscape mosaics, landscape dynamics, stakeholder approaches, the identification of site-level options, hands-on site-level forest restoration and rehabilitation strategies, scenario modelling, and monitoring and evaluation. The result is by far the most comprehensive and easy-to-understand treatment of FLR yet written.

The threatened species categories used in Red Data Books and Red Lists have been in place for almost 30 years. The IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria provide an easily and widely understood system for classifying species at high risk of global extinction, so as to focus attention on conservation measures designed to protect them. This latest version of the classification system was adopted by the IUCN Council in February 2001 and reflects comments from the IUCN and SSC memberships and the final meeting of the Criteria Review Working Group.

The Alternatives to Slash and Burn (ASB) consortium was formed in 1992 by a group of concerned national and international research institutions to address the global and local issues associated with this form of agriculture. With contributions from agronomists, foresters, economists, ecologists, and anthropologists, this book synthesizes the first decade of ASB's work. It assesses the environmental, economic, and social impact of deforestation and identifies the costs and benefits of alternative uses of forests and cleared land. Throughout the volume, the contributors present new conceptual tools and a rich compendium of empirical analyses needed to formulate viable alternatives to slash-and-burn agriculture.

Central African elephant populations are faced with many threats including illegal killing, habitat loss and habitat fragmentation. Most conservation and management problems pertaining to elephant populations are common to all the countries of the sub-region and many important elephant populations straddle political boundaries of one or more Range States. Therefore, a sub-regional approach is needed to collectively address these problems. Upon the request of the ministers responsible for wildlife conservation from the seven central African elephant Range States, a meeting was held from 29 August to 2 September 2005 in Limbé, Cameroon, with the aim of developing a sub-regional strategy for the conservation and management of central African elephants. The meeting was convened and coordinated by the IUCN/SSC African Elephant Specialist Group (AfESG). The strategy presented in this document is the final outcome of this meeting.

This General Management Plan (GMP) aims to provide a framework for managing the Mnazi Bay Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park (MBREM) over the next two years. In essence, it represents a form of contract between the authorities in charge of the management of the Park and the communities that will be impacted by the management of the Park on the other. This GMP sets out the means and mechanisms for the conservation of marine biodiversity and the sustainable management of human activities in MBREMP. To this end, it contains management goals, with specified targets and objectives, and the appropriate management strategies that will achieve these goals.

This report outlines the findings of the Coastal Livelihood Assessment for the Kuruwitu – Vipingo community, which lies on a Kenyan coast potentially significant for its marine biodiversity, as it has a distinct coral reef ecosystem with diverse coral assemblages which host a wide variety of tropical fish species as well as beaches that provide breeding and nesting sites for endangered sea turtles and birds. In response to declining marine life, and related decreases in local earnings and food security, the local community formed the Kuruwitu Conservation and Welfare Association (KCWA). They approached the East African Wild Life Society (EAWLS) for assistance in conserving these resources and supporting the local livelihoods dependent on them. The East African Wild Life Society intends to implement a pilot community based marine conservation area project at Kuruwitu in Kilifi, Coast Province, for which a number of research activities are being carried out, including the Coastal Livelihood Assessment.
