The aim of this publication is to present an initial synthesis of core problems in each region, the status and focus of related research, and corresponding new research needs. This book provides an overview of knowledge about the negative impacts of global and local change in selected regions of the world, based on qualitative appraisals made by multarget_idisciplinary teams of specialists. It also outlines how research can contribute to mitigating these impacts and reinforcing positive trends in order to promote sustainable developmen.

This brochure is a brief presentation of highlights drawn from "Impacts of a warming Arctic", the plain language synthesis report of the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment (ACIA). This assessment was called for by the Arctic Council and the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC).

This study arises from concern that New Zealand is losing its important natural and cultural landscapes. It draws together literature on landscape protection in New Zealand and elsewhere, includes a review of case law, and contains material gathered from case studies of the Waitakere Ranges, Coromandel Peninsula, Wakatipu Basin, Banks Peninsula and Whangarei District. The study focuses on the protection of important landscapes, on privately owned land, from the impact of urban and rural-residential development and associated infrastructure. It pays particular attention to obtaining a better understanding of the problems being experienced with protecting important landscapes.

Conservation can best be achieved when conservation values are part of the mainstream of society, when they “become part of everyone’s decisions” including government, private enterprise and the community as a whole. This was recognized by the more than 320 participants from Pacific island governments, Pacific and international organizations and community groups when they met in Rarotonga, Cook Islands in July 2002 for the 7th Conference on Nature Conservation and Protected Areas. This strategy is the major result of that conference. As such this strategy represents a consensus of the priority concerns for conservation and ways in which these can be addressed in the coming four years.

Water has become one of the most critical issues of the new century and is certainly of vital importance to sustainable ecosystem management. The objective of the present monograph is to contribute substantially to discussion on water and highlight current issues that are essential of the survival of humankind. Scarcity of water in some regions and abundance of water in others, degradation of water and pollution of entire watersheds have already led to regional – and even global – conflicts. The Amazon basin, which contains 15% of the word’s freshwater resources within its watershed, has become a covered resource, the subject of international debate and the object of international desire. Given the water shortage in many regions of the word, the privileged situation of the Amazon basin could inspire misguided political decisions to “right the imbalance” at the risk of undermining the sustainable use of water resources in specific ecosystem and unleashing large-scale catastrophes. The will demand solid scientific input. International co-operation is needed in order to tackle head on openly the most critical issues. New approaches to problem-solving must be found as well as new avenues for co-operation, not between only the countries immediately concerned but also involving the rest o the word. Hence the title present monograph. Issues of Local and Global use of Water from the Amazon. The current monograph was prepared to provide scientific input to the abovementioned debate. It also was a contribution to the Third Word Water Forum held in Kyoto, Japan, in March 2003. Papers selected for this publication were chosen from presentations given at two international seminars in Belem, Brazil, in June 2002 and March 2003, which involved more 200 people from the region and brought together a series of eminent personalities working on water-related topics in the eight countries of the Amazon region. The Federal Minister for Science and Technology of Brazil was present at the 2003 seminar. The seminars were jointly organized within the framework of the South-South Co-operation Programme by UNESCO/MAB, UNU and the university of Para, Belem. They were also part of a collaboration between MAB and UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme. The chapters of this monograph deal with many interrelated topics associated with freshwater in ecosystems with abundant water resource. There are sections about the water cycle in the Amazon, pollution, fluvial transport, energy issues, geopolitics, institutional framework, water resource management, and international co-operation.

This text examines the flaws in community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) and proposes remedies for many locations and circumstances; shows how CBNRM can be central to sustainable development and the conservation of biodiversity; and presents a wealth of case studies from southern Africa – the crucible of CBNRM development Community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) refers to rural people managing and using natural resources to enhance their livelihoods. It is widely recognized that much of the Earth's biodiversity is managed in this way, and that local communities can, and must, contribute to conserving biodiversity without sacrificing their access to natural resources. Observers and practitioners have focused on how CBNRM can be employed in sustainable development programs as a means to overcome poverty in various parts of the globe. Recently, however, the CBNRM concept has been criticized because many of these programs have not yet had major positive impacts on improved rural livelihoods or conservation of biodiversity. This book identifies and analyzes the flaws, which are often swept under the carpet by those involved in CBNRM initiatives, and proposes remedies for a variety of circumstances based on lessons learned in southern Africa over the past decade.
