An inventory and assessment of invasive alien plant species of Nepal

Biological diversity faces many threats throughout the world. One of the major threats to native biological diversity is caused by Invasive Alien Species (IAS) which can damage or replace native animal and plant populations, as well as the health of our ecosystems. The impacts of IAS are immense, insidious and usually irreversible. The scope and cost of biological alien invasives is global and enormous in ecological, environmental and economic terms. This inventory and assessment is based on experts’ consultation, literature and field studies in collaboration with local partners such as high schools, community forest user groups, community-based NGOs, farmers and other stakeholders.
People and protected areas in South Asia
   

This publication, which contains 23 papers selected from several regional and national meetings, including the 2003 Regional Preparatory Meeting held in Dhaka, tries to capture many pioneering works in participatory conservation in the region and also tries to identify gaps in ecosystem representation in South Asia. It brings out many contemporary issues related to conservation while pooling national experiences in managing protected areas. Lastly, the book provides a handy reference to the protected areas of each of the seven countries of South Asia.

A collaboration between indigenous leaders, social activists and scholars from a wide range of disciplines, In the Way of Development explores the current situation of indigenous peoples enmeshed in the remorseless expansion of the modern economy. The volume assembles a rich diversity of statements, case studies and wider thematic explorations all starting with indigenous peoples as actors, not victims. The accounts come primarily from North America, but include also studies from South America, and the former Soviet Union. The book shows how the boundaries between indigenous peoples' organizations, civil society, the state, markets, development and the environment are ambiguous and constantly changing. This fact makes local political agency possible, but also, ironically, opens the possibility of undermining it. The volume presents these complex, power-laden, often contradictory features of indigenous agency and relationships. It shows how peoples do not just resist or react to the pressures of market and state, but also sustain 'life projects' of their own.

The book begins with eight chapters on the issues around seeds globally and the practicalities of saving your own seeds. Three quarters of the book is on 117 food plants, mostly vegetables, with the remainder culinary flowers, herbs and spices. Each plant has a description, its wild origins, how to cultivate it, save its seeds or otherwise propagate it, storage of the seed and its medicinal and culinary uses.  Permaculture, biodiversity, organics and companion planting are the principles that underlie the contents of this book.

Tenencia y comercio de fauna silvestre en Nicaragua

Mediante 1012 entrevistas directas dirigidas a adultos se realizó una encuesta en Nicaragua - excluyendo la población de la región Atlántica - sobre tenencia de fauna silvestre. La proporción de hogares con fauna silvestre fue de 22.3%. Los géneros Brotogeris, Aratinga, Amazona, Pionus y Kinosternon / Rhynochlemys fueron los taxa encontrados con mayor frecuencia en los hogares. La mayor proporción relativa de tenencia de fauna silvestre por hogar se encontró en el nivel socioeconómico alto. En este contexto, se realizaron proyecciones demográficas con las poblaciones de Amazona silvestres que soportan el impacto de extracción para el comercio nacional e internacional y se analizó la viabilidad de las mismas bajo dos escenarios; en todos los casos (dos escenarios simulados y tres especies estudiadas) el modelo de sostenibilidad del comercio de Amazona da como resultado la extinción de las tres especies en el mediano o largo plazo, mostrando que la extracción de fauna silvestre en las condiciones actuales se lleva a cabo en forma irracional.

Reducing disaster risk : a challenge for development
   

This Report is premised on the belief that in many countries the process of development itself has a huge impact — both positive and negative — on disaster risk. It shows how countries that face similar patterns of natural hazards — from floods to droughts — often experience widely differing impacts when disasters occur. The impact depends in large part on the kind of development choices they have made previously. As countries become more prosperous, for example, they are often better able to afford the investments needed to build houses more likely to withstand earthquakes. At the same time, the rush for growth can trigger haphazard urban development that increases risks of large-scale fatalities during such a disaster. The same is true in many other areas.While humanitarian action to mitigate the impact of disasters will always be vitally important, the global community is facing a critical challenge: How to better anticipate — and then manage and reduce — disaster risk by integrating the potential threat into its planning and policies.

The extraction of live coral to burn and produce "white lime" or "chokaa" has a long history in Tanzania, yet in many areas it is believed that this practice has reached unsustainable levels and is considered to be one of the main contributors to reef and forest degradation along the coast. This assessment was developed to describe the size, geographic extent and socioeconomics of the coral mining and lime production industry within the buffer zone of Mnazi Bay-Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park.
