Human wellbeing depends on the capacity of the earth’s natural systems to provide ecosystem goods and services. However, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment chillingly concludes that unless we take action to mitigate the current decline in ecosystem services, the cost to society will be substantial. In this publication, IUCN defines three key challenges that will need to be addressed in the near future in order to deliver internationally-agreed development goals. Actions for implementation for all three challenges are also proposed, as well as some ‘First Steps’ that should be initiated now if we are to secure our future.

An environmental flow is the water regime provided within a river, wetland or coastal zone to maintain ecosystems and their benefits where there are competing water uses and where flows are regulated. Pioneering efforts in South Africa, Australia and the United States have shown that the process to establish them poses great challenges. Second in the series of the Water & Nature Initiative, this guide draws extensively on the experiences in these countries to offer hands-on advice and practical guidance on technical issues for this emerging issue on the water resource agenda.

Despite endorsements of the concept of sustainable development and the linking of sustainable development with the Millennium Development Goals, progress towards the eradication of poverty has been disappointing. The underlying principles of sustainable development need to be more critically and actively applied to both poverty reduction and biodiversity conservation. While recognizing the need for better integration of poverty reduction and conservation objectives by both developmental and conservation agencies, particular attention is paid to the reasons why conservation should do better in contributing to long-term sustainable development and more immediately to poverty reduction.

Le rapport annuel 2004 est le second d'une nouvelle serie que l'UICN en Afrique de l'ouest a décidé d'éditer à l'intention de ses membres et partenaires. Ce rapport fait la synthèse des activités réalisées au cours de l'année 2004 par le programme régional; année qui aura été marquée par un bon développement du programme régional et par la tenue du troisième Congrés mondial de la nature à Bangkok en Thaïlande au cours duquel le nouveau programme 2005 - 2008 fut adopté. En effet au programme actuel en pleine croissance, l'UICN BRAO ambitionne d'ajouter de nouvelles perspectives thématiques, occuper de nouvelles niches géographiques dans la région, s'allier à de nouveaux partenaires techniques et financiers et s'ouvrir de nouveaux boulevards de communications.

They, along with the Intersessional Programme, financial plan and Commission mandates, provide the Union with a framework to be more effective in pursuing our mission.

For the 13th meeting of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-13), the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) commissioned the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) to produce this report. The report presents recommendations for policy and decision makers with regard to sustainable food production, sustainable food consumption and ecological sustainability. The topic addressed in this report is an issue identified as being of very high priority for Sida. Collaborating partners for the report were the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), IUCN and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI).

The Vth IUCN World Parks Congress was the largest gathering of protected area experts. Impacts of Sakhalin II phase 2 on western North Pacific gray whales and related biodiversity : report of the Independent Scientific Review Panel

The population of western gray whales numbers only about 100 animals and is classified on IUCN's Red List as "critically endangered". Under the auspices of IUCN, an independent scientific review panel was established to evaluate scientific aspects of western gray whale conservation in the context of Phase 2 of the Sakhalin II, an integrated oil and gas project being developed by the Sakhalin Energy Investment Company under a production sharing agreement with the Russian Federation and its Sakhalin Oblast. This report of the Panel provides a detailed consideration of the risks, the options for mitigation and the need for monitoring if and as oil and gas development proceeds.

The status and distribution of freshwater biodiversity in eastern Africa

Biodiversity within inland water ecosystems in Eastern Africa is highly diverse and of great importance to livelihoods and economies, however, development activities are not always compatible with the conservation of this diversity and it is poorly represented in the development planning process. One of the main reasons is the lack of readily available information on the status and distribution of inland water taxa. In a response to this need for information, the IUCN/SSC Freshwater Biodiversity Assessment Programme conducted a regional assessment of over 1,600 taxa of freshwater fishes, molluscs, odonates and crabs from Burundi, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. In the process of the study, which is based on the collation and analysis of existing information, regional experts from five of these countries were trained in biodiversity assessment methods and, where appropriate, in field assessment and taxonomy. Distribution ranges have been mapped for the majority of species so providing an important tool for application to the conservation and development planning process. The full dataset is to be made freely available through the internet and through distribution on CD-ROM.
