This guide has been prepared by the IUCN Environmental Law Programme and the Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development (FIELD), in cooperation with the World Resources Institute (WRI). The main goal of the guide is to facilitate the understanding of the obligations of Parties to the Protocol, by providing an information base on the content and origin of the Protocol provisions, accessible to the non-specialist and useful for those who will be involved in the development and implementation of national safety frameworks.

Cloud forest agenda

Cloud forests represent a rare and fragile ecosystem that is under threat in many parts of the world. These rich mountain forests make up no more than 2.5 per cent of the world's tropical forests but contain a disproportionately large number of the world's species. The Cloud Forest Agenda report aims to stimulate new initiatives and partnerships for the conservation and restoration of tropical montane cloud forests around the world. The report provides the first global maps of cloud forests, a regional analysis of the threats facing these forests and information on their biodiversity and watershed importance.
Integrating biodiversity conservation and sustainable use : lessons learned from ecological networks

IUCN's 5th World Parks Congress (2003) concluded that parks should not exist as unique islands, but need to be planned and managed as an integral part of the broader landscape. Ecological networks provide an operational model for conserving biodiversity that is based on ecological principles and allow a degree of human use of the landscape. This publication illustrates the development of several ecological networks around the world, demonstrating their benefits both for conservation and sustainable development.

Regional action plan for the conservation of chimpanzees in West Africa

The following action plan details a strategy for protecting 80% of the surviving chimpanzees in West Africa at a cost of US$9 million. The plan resulted from a recent workshop in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, where an international group of 72 biologists, protected areas managers, government officials, and other experts met to discuss priority actions for protecting chimpanzees in West Africa. A key feature of this plan is the protection of chimpanzee habitat, an approach that would also benefit numerous other threatened species in a region that ranks among the world's most biologically diverse.

Biodiversity and the ecosystem approach in agriculture, forestry and fisheries
   

This publication is the proceedings for a satellite event on Biodiversity and the Ecosystem Approach in Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, held on the occasion of the Ninth Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, in FAO, Rome, 12-13 October 2002. An informal presentation of the Satellite Event’s discussions and results was given on 16 October 2002. About 100 participants attended the day and a half event. The meeting aimed to improve awareness of the importance of biological diversity, through concrete cases from around the world, and to support the integration of the ecosystem approach applied to all types of production systems and policies and within biodiversity programmes and plans.

 
Territorial strategies and environmental continuity in mountain systems : the case of the Appennines (Italy)
