IUCN, WWF and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have developed this guidebook to assist marine protected area (MPA) managers in assessing the performance of their MPA. Based on this assessment, it shows how necessary changes can be made to improve management measures. It presents a flexible approach that can be used in many types of MPA and offers a variety of specific biological, socio-economic and governance indicators to measure the effectiveness of management actions in achieving MPA goals and objectives.

Through the ever-increasing extent and intensity of human exploitation of natural resources, however, the pattern of human activities as islands in a sea of nature has become reversed in most of the world’s regions. Habitat fragmentation is now one of the most important causes of the decline in biodiversity. The main purpose of this review is to assist the understanding of the practical value of maintaining, enhancing, creating or restoring linkages.
Enhancing social sustainability in activities to combat desertification : a manual for reflection
   

In West Africa, desertification threatens the living conditions of over 250 million people. The results of projects to combat desertification undertaken over the last 40 years or so have been mixed. One reason for this is probably that technical or technological approaches have taken precedence over the sociological approach. This manual is intended to bring the reader back to the social dimensions of the fight against desertification, focusing on sustainable management of natural resources in arid, semi-arid and sub-humid environments.

Feasibility of a monitoring programme for the Guiana Shield Initiative

The Guiana Shield region contains more than 25% of the world’s tropical rainforests, most still in pristine condition. The Guiana Shield Initiative is working to preserve this ecologically important and unique area of the earth. In order to do so, up-to-date and accurate information is needed – a greater part of which could be fulfilled by the development of a suitable monitoring system based on remote sensing methods. The aim of this report is to outline the approach to monitoring that could be taken when contracts are established between local ecosystem managers and the Guiana Shield regional financial mechanism. Information needs feasibility and costs of monitoring at a regional level are identified and a proposal for a multi-scale monitoring system is made.
Sustainable ecotourism in the Guiana shield region : a working document for the Guiana Shield Initiative

The Guiana Shield has 10-15% of the world’s freshwater reserves, a virtually uninterrupted stretch of 2.5 million km2 of tropical rainforests and biodiversity that exists only in this region. This region performs vital functions for the world’s climate, the regional hydrology and the preservation of biological capital. Revenue from tourism from visitors enjoying the wonders of the Guiana Shield should be a sizeable part of the economy. The industry must be developed respecting the nature and culture of the region, with the proceeds and employment distributed amongst stakeholders. This report aims to alert policymakers to ecotourism as a key factor in a truly sustainable economy of the Guiana Shield region.

Today wetland ecosystems are viewed as essential elements in integrated river basin planning, which draws upon the most appropriate modern science and traditional knowledge. This book tells of the partial restoration of the Waza Logone floodplain of Cameroon, using lessons from the floodplain’s history to partially correct earlier mistakes.

Cloud forest agenda

Cloud forests represent a rare and fragile ecosystem that is under threat in many parts of the world. These rich mountain forests make up no more than 2.5 per cent of the world's tropical forests but contain a disproportionately large number of the world's species. The Cloud Forest Agenda report aims to stimulate new initiatives and partnerships for the conservation and restoration of tropical montane cloud forests around the world. The report provides the first global maps of cloud forests, a regional analysis of the threats facing these forests and information on their biodiversity and watershed importance.
Integrating biodiversity conservation and sustainable use : lessons learned from ecological networks

IUCN's 5th World Parks Congress (2003) concluded that parks should not exist as unique islands, but need to be planned and managed as an integral part of the broader landscape. Ecological networks provide an operational model for conserving biodiversity that is based on ecological principles and allow a degree of human use of the landscape. This publication illustrates the development of several ecological networks around the world, demonstrating their benefits both for conservation and sustainable development.
