The reduction of world poverty is a major challenge for the international community over the next decade. It is increasingly clear that the our capacity to successfully achieve this objective will be undermined if the natural resource base for development is threatened.

Biodiversity is a fundamental characteristic of that resource base, defining many of its immediate and future potentials and vulnerabilities. The purpose of this document is to explore how biodiversity and people’s interactions with it might either support or restrict poverty reduction processes. It does so by aiming to develop a better understanding of biodiversity, the values it holds, and how people respond to it. It attempts to shed light on the differing impacts of these values - and their associated management systems on people’s livelihoods, especially those of the poorest groups. It ends with a presentation of possible future actions.

Conservación de la naturaleza en tierras de propiedad privada

Esta publicación tiene por objetivo describir las herramientas jurídicas del ordenamiento argentino que podrían aplicarse a la conservación de la naturaleza en tierras de propiedad privada. Con esa finalidad, se describen algunos mecanismos jurídicos contemplados en la legislación nacional, tales como la servidumbre, el usufructo o el fideicomiso, y las posibles ventajas e inconvenientes que su aplicación podría generar a quien decidiera utilizarlas. De una manera muy especial se ha considerado la experiencia de países como Brasil, Costa Rica, México, Ecuador, Chile y Paraguay en la materia. Considerando el escaso territorio sujeto a algún sistema de conservación de la naturaleza y la falta de un manejo adecuado de muchas de las áreas públicas, resulta necesario implementar mecanismos que no solamente permitan sino alienten a los propietarios de tierras con especial riqueza en recursos naturales, a integrarlas a sistemas de conservación con una perspectiva de larga duración, de modo de complementar el objetivo de las áreas protegidas públicas, de conservar la naturaleza para las futuras generaciones.
